I was told by my mentor, DM and log guy that we should log the drive time because if by chance a DOT official pops up and asks to see the log book and you ain't on line 3.... Now, do I when I'm in the oddball yard where I have to hit the road for about 45 seconds to pull around to the fuel island?

I believe the authrization form that you are suppose to have in your possesion entitles you to scan logs and such as off duty...Swift Transportation Off-Duty Authorization.
So anybody from safety/logs telling you anything different is not very informed....just sayin

I never log scanning as "on duty" time. It only takes a few seconds to write numbers on that scan sheet and I do that when I drop the load. It's part of unloading paperwork and doesn't add to my time. Later, when I get fuel, I carry my paperwork in with me when I go get the fuel ticket. I'm already on duty feuling, so it gets logged with that.

This is the first time I have ever heard of any DOT officer place someone OOS because of scanning paperwork. I hope Swift is having a chat with that officer's chain of command if that's the only reason the driver was placed OOS. I can't believe there isn't more to this. I'll talk to my DM about this Monday.

If the driver hadjust completed 11 hrs off duty, scanned the ppwk, drove 15 miles down the road and got nailed, any officer whether in the Communist Republic of Oregon or elsewhere would normally point it out and say fix it. Maybe, just maybe, give the driver a receipt. But in the case I describe, there is no call to place the driver OOS.

I think this might be a question for Dieselbear if we can get his attention. I can't copy/paste links, so if someone would please PM Dieselbear with a link to this thread, I'd like to hear his opinion.

If Safety is now expecting everyone to log 15 minutes each time a trip is scanned, it wil cost the company an awful lot of money. It sounds to me like we have two rookies: our Safety guy and an Oregon DOT officer.

    WYLDFYUR:
    Your information is incorrect!!!!

Once you go from line #1 or #2 and move to #4 or #3, your "#14 hour rule" starts. i.e. You start your day at 0600 hrs - it ends at 2000 hrs. You cannot go over 14 hrs within any category. Within this #14 window you cannot go over 11 hrs driving.

    I hope this is helpful.

She's right. The 14 hour controls the 11. You can work beyond the 14, not drive. And you can not drive until 10 hrs after the last time you worked.

    YOUR INFORMATION IS INCORRECT !!!!!

had to say it. Acutally, the part i quoted, you are incorrect. You can be on line 4 all day if you want. You could be working with the red cross cleaning up tornado damage, and be doing it for a straight 24 hrs if felt so inclined. You just CANNOT DRIVE till you've taken a 10 hr break. It isnt your 14hr WORK clock, it is still your 14-hr DRIVE clock. now it still eats your 70 for the week, but you sure as heck CAN be on line 4 for longer than 14 hrs.....just cant drive till u take a 10.

guess i should have just said 'ditto'.

If you are working in cleaning up a tornado or whatever, it is possible to still be driving over 11 hours if there is an emergency issued suspending the HOS.

well, the example i had in my head was i was parked, a tornado hit, leveled the Flyin'J (would do them a favor...hahaaha) and i helped pick up the pieces.

yeah....you get 2 hrs of 'emergency drive time', but that just means you have 2 hrs to find the first place to pull over and shut down....dont mean you get a free 2 hrs to drive and THEN shut down.

FEMA suspends all HOS and you can drive 20 hours a day if you want.

It is what was done during Katrina.
