Vehicle in front of you...always slow down. (to rear end...your at fault)

Making lane changes, always give a minimum notice by your indicator lights...two blinks.
a), to side swipe a vehicle, means your at fault.
b), If, your vehicle is rear ended then, other guy is at fault.
c), if, you drive off the roadway...your at fault.

Never make lane changes until you may safely moved fully into the lane.
Always slow down, in case your involved in an accident...the decreased speed will lessen the injury to property and/or life.

Especially CRST safety directors. Every thing they say or believes comes from a safety manual written by government officials who've never even seen the inside of a truck before. Much less driven one.

Nothing lane , nothing at all, whatsoever....when it's done with a hint of courtesy , but this wasn't the case ( it wasn't at the same time ) since..... in your words....

The deputy was still behind me at least a cars length and maybe 1/2 way across the dotted line when I turned on my blinker. Key words, "still behind me". I was at least 1/4 of the way into the right lane

the deputy was farther into the lane than you 1st , that means he had already claimed that lane , common courtesy and safety dictates that you should have yielded to him , and got back over into the other lane , it's simple , you pushed a bad position , and while the deputy could have yielded to you , he didn't , that's where the attitude thing comes into play....you , the professional driver , should have practiced a modicum of patience , and some courtesy , instead you chose to push a bad position. like I said simple....

Actually prevention is the most important thing. Meaning not allowing yourself to be put in that situation. I know we're only human but it could've been prevented.

You were indecisive when you hesitated to switch lanes although you did a stellar job of recognizing the need to in advance. The three things stressed in defensive driving is to REVIEW (Passed), RECOGNIZE (Passed) & REACT (Failed) to prevent a potentially hazardous situation. Had you made that lane switch initially then you wouldn't even be here asking this question.

According to nearly every safety director ( like Tony) everything is preventable.

And the Safety man is never wrong.
