They probably would have sent you home anyway if you hadn't quit! You can't say stuff like that! You take the load where it needs to go when it needs to be there. You can't sit at home until the road conditions suit your needs!
Was I wrong for quitting US Xpress?

A 30 hour bus trip with a night at a bus stop, just so I could train on a dedicated run. Well maybe if it was a dedicated run with 6-8 stops in a big city.
You went to the orientation 3 hours from your house right? I assume they must have a yard there, why would they send you 30 hours on a bus? This whole scenario doesn't make sense. Not only that but your recruiter told you that it would be a dedicated night shift? That seems like an awful lot of honesty coming from a recruiter.
I guess you got lucky and got out at the right time, it could have been a 60 hour bus trip.ship71021 Thanks this. -
For what it's worth, i drove for USX for a year and 4 months. In that time I visited 43 of the lower 48. I went to a dedicated account shortly after getting off the trainer truck. It was Reckit-Beckiser/Excel Diagio acount. As a solo driver I severel east-west coast runs,(unheard of for the otr solos) I was very lucky. I had a great trainer, There again I was lucky. Would I have waited in a bus terminal to meet up with a trainer, YES, but I have done and I am sure will continue to do things that are not to bright. The point I want to make is this; what I would do and what worked for me is not what works for everyone else. We are individuals. All of the major carriers I am sure have people who will do things to trainees and a seat drivers as well, like the original poster described. I cant knock him for saying no to USX. People on both sides of this fence have valid points. My short answer is you need to do whats right for number one and if it bites you in the --- later suck it up and move on and learn from it. That being said unless you are reckless on the road or have much worse happen to you while you are out there there are plenty other jobs out there..just my opinion.

I can't believe they wouldn't spring for a plane ticket on that one. 30 hr bus ride is pretty excessive and I doubt all that much cheaper than the airplane anyway.
I don't blame you for binning that one, but realize that starting out with pretty much any training company is going to have its rough spots and crap sandwiches to eat. You're going to see lots and lots of guys out there On the road who have it way better than you do and that's not going to change for awhile. -

Question, How can it be a 30 hour ride from Va. to Chicago?
Did that include the wait time in Ohio for the Chicago bus?
I think somebody is not telling the whole story about this.
The not wanting to run nights. Well tough doggie doo, that is part of the bussiness.
Plus they could still get their backing practice at the shipper and reciever. true?
I think it's the riding the bus they did not want to do as they posted they drove 3 hours to start with thecompany as they do not like riding a bus.
I think also if it had been a long layover say 6 hours or more, I wwould of asked them will you pay the motel room while I wait for the next bus.
Heck I had a 7 hour layover in Hong Kong at the airport. Sucked it up, and hit the beer stand and noodle shop..
Was wanting to go venture out, but was afaird I'd miss my next flight.. -
I think with layovers an the fact greyhound stops at every podunk town along the way, (and Virginia has alot of podunk) 30 hrs is plausible!
-
Ok, Been a long long time since I rode Greyhound in the states. Like 1990 was the last time.
Left Toledo,Oh. and with 2 stops was in Chicago like in 4 1/2 hours.
Here where we live they have the busses and you can pick what they call the vip buss. A/C and straight shot to destion, with maybe one or two breaks. Depending on the length of the trip
Or you can get the local run that stops for who ever is standing on the side of the road and flag them down.
It's weird as they still have what I would call a conductor. If you get on from the road they will come to you ask how far are you going, then tell you the price of the ticket. Some of them have a/c and some don't. I learned that the hard way, plus the seats are the old wooden bench seats.
Trust me, pay the little extra and go the VIP buss. -
USX pays for the ticket. If they don't care a guy has an overnight layover in Ohio, I really doubt they'll spring for a nonstop.

this job has it ups an downs. i love being out on the open road, jamming to some good music during the daytime in clear sunny cool weather. well guess what...........that is a rare thing. you will have to do some crazy stuff out here. will the trainer go over that with you? probably not.
try getting a call at the last minute to run a 14 hour load that has to be there in 10 hours, then it takes 4 hours to get unloaded, then you have to drive an hour for a reload that takes another 4 hours to load, and they use the stupid CB radio NOT THE PHONE to assign you to a dock, so you cant sleep. you get said load, and it a 10 hour run and you have 11 hours to get there.
we have all done that, and probably more than once too i would imagine. i look at things this way......and i am going to quote someone.......
