A preventable is anything a company wants it to be. It is a made up concept.

Most companies call a dear strike a non-preventable only for the reasons you outlined. If they considered it a preventable the masses of brain dead idiot steering wheel holders at the megas, (the place where the 'preventable' concept was invented) would take stupid evasive action just to avoid a deer. Trucks would end up rolled over and in dangerous serious secondary collisions just so some mega idiot could avoid a preventable with a deer.

Exactly, at a mega you are just a seasonal worker just like a migrant fruit picker; when freight drops off and they don't need you they add up your "safety" issues and fire you for just cause, avoiding paying unemployment.

The only concern they truly have about "shortage" is the how small or large is the government subsidy check is each month for training.

Or your miles are so low which pretty much forces a driver to quit. Then companies don't have worry about drivers filing for unemployment because they weren't enmployed long enough to earn those benefits.
