water pump

Never had that exact problem but I will share some others.
On pumps connected to gasoline engines I have had some engine failures. The products were liquid nitrogen, fertilizer, or molasses products. Many seals are made to keep a product in as a crankshaft seal keeps oil in the engine. It may have a lip to keep dirt away from the seal but it is not a double seal which holds product ( liquid ) in both directions. Liquid can wick down the shaft and through the seal into the engine. Do not see why a Detroit water pump would be any different as Wore Out said.
Thanks for the post on the Detroit impeller slipping. Never saw that or one run as long as yours did on anything.

 

OK I've worked on one S60 in my life and I remember something about it. So answer these questions -

is the water pump on the front of the engine?

is the water pump driven by any belts?

If the answer is no to the last one, replace the water pump because a pressure test will not reveal a bad seal and that's what you have.

See what many of you are missing is that this goes right into the gear cover and a water pump is the first source of coolant in the oil issue, even though there are two or three others.

So replace the water pump. You should anyway.

 

Just not buying the coolant in the oil thing from a water pump. They just arent designed that way. They are designed to leak coolant and or oil onto the ground if seal failure happens.

Sorry not buying it.

 

I've seen it happen. Weep hole is plugged and it pushes past the other seal. I couldn't figure it out for the longest time but with the pan down you could spin the engine over and watch coolant leak down from the water pump. Seen it happen on kitty cats too.

 

Well if the weep hole was plugged that would be different.

 

I once saw a man put a plug in the weep hole on a kitty kat water pump. He didn't like the leaking coolant mess. That little blunder cost him a rebuild because the coolant had only one other place it could go - into the oil.
