I am already going to a school on my own through an unemployment grant. I want to apply to Watkins & Shepard as they seem to be a great company. What is the training program for those who already have their CDL? From what I understand it's 10 days and then you get your own truck? No trainers after the 10 days either? Do these guys run the east coast seeing that's where I live? Thanks guys, the training thread was great!

Looks like BIG a red flag to me... Why would a company want you to be able to do this? When they issue your truck do they also give you a jar of vaseline?
Haha!! don't get all mad.. I'm only joking I'm sure it's a good company. Dunno if anyone else caught that but I just couldn't let it go by without comment...

I see that Watkins/Shepard advertises that first year drivers income will average $43,300 a year.
I know that this will vary in the slow economic times we are experiencing, but for those of you that have driven for a year or less with W/S does the income seem to be close. -
Just an update guys...I spoke with a recruiter at W/S and will eb attending their 10 day prientation starting 7/9/08 in Sayerville, NJ which is only 45 miles from where I live then after completing orientation over the road I go! I will be running all 48 states and expect to be home every 2 or 3 weeks which is fine with me. I consider it like boot camp, just something I got to get through...my right of passage. I wanted to thank everyone who has posted here as I have learned a lot, not only about W/S but the industry as well. Now just to get tham miles! I will drive as hard and long as allowed to get 'em too.

When driving for Watkins/Shepard do they let you use a laptop with a laptop holder attached to the passenger seat of your truck. I would like to be able to use one for a Co-Pilot Truckers GPS system for laptops.
-
Yes. W/S lets you arrange your truck they way you like. I have even seen the passenger seat removed and a home gym installed in its place. I had them remove a cabinet from my brand new Freightliner so that I could install a fridge/freezer. I also installed a audio/video surround sound system, tivo, game system, directtv dome, large inverter and many other custom things. It may take me 2 days to move into the next new truck in the future, but its nice to be able to do what you want to do.
-
That would be correct.
As an added bonus. You could make more, due to your area. Heavy haul pays a nice bonus. -
I would like to know the approximate cost for food and licensing fees for the 30 day students that attend the W/S training.

Contact recruiting. They'll be more than happy to speak with you, and answer all your questions.
