Appreciate the reply WingRider. Your right, I'll never know unless I try. Exactly my train of thought as well. Thanks, and be safe.

Trucking Jobs in 30 seconds

I think you should go ahead and give it a go. You already said you would get tired of the same old routine. I think you will find that a local job is going to get pretty boring in the long run, so I wouldn't discount staying OTR for more than a year. You may love it but won't know either way till you try it.

This has been a great discussion, and I have read every page and every post. I have always thought about becoming a truck driver - and even more so recently as I work a very boring job and will continue to do so for a while. (I answer phone calls and help dental practices solve their software problems. Aint nothin' like being on the phone for 10+ hours a day for min. wage!). Everything I have heard about Watkins and Shepherd sounds like a great company to start out with at least - especially if you compare them to companies like C.R. England and Werner.
I should be starting school here before too long. I have called and talked with Roxy and the app is on its way. Not sure if I am going to their training or staying local - but either way is great.
Thanks for all the advice on this thread!

For the W&S 30 day students, how many hours behind the wheel are you getting during training with an instructor.
-
Usually 6-8 hours a day. You are in the truck all day long most days. Some days you will be in the truck in the morning and after lunch you will be in the classroom for a couple hours.
-
Do they give you many written tests in the class. How long does the class room last in terms of weeks.

Hey all. I start Roadmasters Aug 18th and I just applied for WS toady. Want to get everything ready for the 10 day training when I am done with Roadmasters. I was going to go with a different company until I started reading all these post.
I must say I feel bad about Arkie not able to make it. Sounded like he was really bummed out. Hang in there Arkie, I know it must have been tough to be turned down for someting you really wanted. Just keep your spirits up and live the life of a trucker through this website. I would recommond reading "a year in Crete" or somthing like that. Its under favorite trucking companys. It was started by Evrtrucker and he gives details of his year with Crete. I was wanting to start with Crete after reading his storys, but you have to have 4-6 months experience or go to a approved school. Which here in SLC is the community college which takes to long.
So I will try to get on with WS and if I am still happy after 6 months I will stay, but if not I will go with Crete.
B-Rad, get on the ball and get started with the progam.
From reading this thread you really can't go wrong. I can't wait to get my training done and get started out on the road.
For you drivers out there, How is the Freight moving along. Is it starting to pick up more with the price of crude oil going down? -
