Hey fellas(and gals),
I have my CDL Class A with all the endorsements of course.. I'm curious about Watkins Shepard.. I've had my CDL since May 21, 2010, and graduated truck driving school on/around April 29, 2010. I haven't been driving a commercial class a truck, and don't have any verifiable experience. I'm curious what happens when I go to Watkins Shepard? Will they accept me? Will I still be able to have 10 days training, and then be on my own? What happens during the 10 days usually? Do they road test multiple times? Will they likely require a refresher?
Would it make sense to tell them I will take a refresher, and then see if they'll accept me? What states do they normally run? How long are you usually out? Whats avg miles per week?
I realize some of my questions are probably repetitive of others, but thats such the life on a forum.. and I apologize in advance.
Thanks,
Justin

you sure are nosey huh?
jk
ok lets see....
call recruiting and tell them when you graduated you might need a refresher, might not, might have to go to school all over i dont know.
we run all 48 state
they ask the OTR guys to stay out 3-4 weeks at a time
Regional drivers are home most weekends (depending on where you live, mainly NC based drivers)
miles 2200-4000 a week average about 2900-3000 a week
wheather or not you have to do a refresher you will go through the 10 day orientation, if they hire you, you go solo.
there will be a few road tests during the 10 days.
for more info on orientation see my thread, chris's (charlb's) thread, or any of the other W/S drivers threads most of us did a day by day update while going threw it.

Thank you for the quick reply! lol! yeah I am nosey.. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row.. TBH I have been trying to find a company that I can get into without having to ride with a trainer, or looking for a local company to hook into, and people said they were out there, but who knows where.. I just don't think I would like being in a truck with "someone" for a month, or two.. :/
I will definitely check all the other threads as well. =) -
I been interested in running with W/S for some time now because of all the great info from everyone (Former CDL driver here but no experience in last 15 years).
I really like the no going out with a trainer thing and the fact they have flatbed division as well
Unfortunately I must have miss understood when I spoke with a recruiter at W/S earlier this past summer. Swear she told me all I needed was a refresher course and could apply once I started it.
Well finally, I started the refresher course call W/S but... no go! they said their insurance won't cover it unless a driver takes a full training course or has at least 6 months recent experience.
Crap! I was bummed! Completely understand though. Insurance is very costly for these companies.
Going with my second choice, Scheinder, which also has some great things about them I like as well. They required 40 hours refresher and I did it. Was able to kick the rust of my driving skills pretty quickly and got right in the flow again. Still need a little work on docking and backing .. but have applied and interviewed waiting to find out my orientation start date.
