Where in a lease/contract is a driver or owner called an "operator"?

I would also want the" true" ones to have that truck paid off.

Well im not an owner op . but i pay the bills like one i pick my freight kinda a choice of three . I pay for my tags fuel and permits. I dont know what else you gotta do to be a classified owner except own the truck . but even then most pay the bank there truck payments so are they considered owners just sayn

How many drivers out here are true owners not very many. Most loads on the board are cheap loads . They couldnt make it . Figure .90 a mile times 4 to adjust for fuel prices and the economy and wear tear . That 3.60 a mile good luck with that . To many foreign drivers out here that will do it 1.00 mile

I think its a great idea! It would cut down on research time , it may even help someone who is having trouble running their business.

Guess a Lease Operator thread separate from the Owner Operator thread would be a benefit for those who are looking for info on leasing through a company but let the battle begin between the ones who are for it and the ones who were burnt by it.

I'm an independent owner/op, but I certainly don't consider myself in a different class than someone leased to Mercer or Farm2Fleet. There's a big distinction between an owner/operator who is running under someone elses authority, and someone who is in a lease/purchase agreement. But I don't think even someone who is lease/purchasing a truck from Schneider would be too happy having someone tell them they aren't an owner/operator. You'll have to be careful, I think we all like that title of owner/operator.

Another thought is it would be great for me if there was a forum just for independent owner/op's pulling stepdecks and flats, but it would probably be crazy to divide it all down that much. Well, regardless of what comes of this I'll try to consider whether the posts I read or comment on are relevant to my situation in the future. The OP makes a good point, I could see where it would be confusing to someone considering lease/purchase with a large van carrier to hear what I had to say.

Lease isn't being used in the correct context in many of the comments here. A lease operator has leased his truck to a carrier, it by definition is under their control at that point. Not saying some carriers don't give free reign to run the truck as the owner or driver wishes. Lease in this situation has nothing to do with getting a replacement truck for a short term situation.
An owner/operator owns the truck and operates under his own authority. Hence the name Owner/Operator. I am an Owner/Operator and my truck is paid off but that really has nothing to do with anything here. Do you really think JB Hunt and Swift truly own free and clear all of their trucks?
