Been looking at the Cobra 29 w/weather channels. With smart phones and the Internet do I really need this anymore? Thoughts?

If you're traveling somewhere far from home and don't have your phone programmed to receive alerts for that county, it can be a nice thing to have.

Cobra is made to pick up any place with a NOAA signal/ I like a police scanner myself. It's a great entry radio.

Agreed, While NOAA is repetitive and bland, they are factual and the channels will only cover the affected area. Better than TV and cable, it's where they get their stuff from, NOAA that is.....

Always good to have on board however you choose IMO....

    MysticTrucker and Saddletramp1200 Thank this.

A Wx radio with auto-tune (travel mode) can be very helpful in the event weather rapidly deteriorates or you enter an area with an immediate storm or tornado threat. Even when the Wx radio is not being listened to, if a warning comes across by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, it will audible you there is an incoming message. You can listen to it or not. Warnings post for both extreme winter events and spring summer type storms and since the range per tower is not extremely far, you won't get many alarms that don't possibly pertain to your present location.

Plus using all the various smartphone apps such as weather and scanners that are constantly querying various web servers and eating data even while the phone is idle and the app not active, can quickly eat into your data limit if it's not terribly large.
