OTR is more of a lifestyle that can pay well if you're able to adapt to it.It wasn't my son's first choice, but after losing 2 local jobs because of the economy he decided to try OTR.He's single w/ no strings holding him anywhere so for now this is working out for him.Once he has enough time in he's going to apply for local jobs;that's just how the system works around here ,so either get used to it or look elsewhere for employment.

I got an updated list of companies I can apply for now that I am all enrolled into school. I am really excited to have the opportunity of branching outside of companies like SWIFT and Werner. Ill have to do more research on Andrus,Central Refrigerated, Prime, and Con-way

I don't mean to offend you or anyone else. I know you are a student driver but........let me try to be of some help.

While I have never driven OTR, I was once in your shoes. Choose your starting company very carefully. There are bad companies out there that prey on new drivers. In my opinion, there is an easy way to spot a junk company.

The easiest way to find a junk company is through company ads. That's right! If a company needs to advertise, for the most part, there is something very wrong. Think about it?

Why do they need drivers? Is it because the economy is turning around and they have more freight than drivers? Or, is it because they are such a junk company that their drivers are leaving in droves for something better? Don't you think that if a company was that good, no one would leave unless they retire? And don't you think that word of mouth would be their best advertising? You decide.

Look at all the code words to make drivers feel good. Driving associate, team member, best in class etc. The list goes on and on. At the end of the day, you are just a driver like anyone else. No shame in that. It's a good profession.

You need to find a career, not just a job. Trucking is a good career where you can make good money and be home with your family where you belong.

Sadly, OTR is not where it's at. Will it change? I don't know. It will not change if the big companies have their way.

    Drive safe

From my understanding he is not going to become a driver just yet. I remember reading that he found a teaching job.

No offense to the O/P but you started this by getting into CDL school and you then later found a teaching job. (IF I'm thinking of the right person). If not, just ignore it lol

Thats me...at least the school is giving me a full refund. It would have been silly to get the license now. Ill consider it again after next year. Ill give teaching one more full year and see how I feel. Its still a bit scary to see happy people have situations suddenly go sour. Ill live my life of a trucker on here for the time being. Its something I will try the timing needs to be just right. I am more than thankful for all the advice I have recieved on here however
