Anybody know if WEL is still setting up orientation and class dates or has it slowed down due to the somewhat predictable years slowdown this time of year? I just Got my CDL on Tuesday, and am Anxious to get back to work!!
-
They do orientation every week
ZippyNH Thanks this. -
My update after 9 months with WEL:
As everyone says, you are a name not a number. I call my dispatcher and tell him my first name and he knows my truck number off the top of his head.. everyone is pesonable and easy to get along with. There is no one at the company that you can't get ahold of or talk to in person
The equipment is rock solid, when you have an issue they get it fixed right away. I'm running a 2010 KW T660 with a Cummins 450 and a 10 speed. All trucks are set at 65 MPH.
Safety record is impecable... currently at 25 days without a DOT acident, previous was about 78 days (and that one ended when a driver hit a cow and truck needed to be towed) - so in over 100 days no DOT reprtable accidents involving other vehicles... what does that mean to you? excellent safestat/CSA 2010 scores = fewer issues at the scales. In 9 months I have never been pulled in to a scale for inspection of any level. You roll in, roll out and keep on driving...
E-logs: as of January 1, 2011 all drivers will be on e-logs. This isn't a bad thing. there is an issue of both drivers and management getting use to the "flexibility" of e-logs, and I am dealing with that now... my miles average 2500 week, but I had a few crummy ones, where they would put me on a 650 mile run with 48 hrs from pick-up to delivery. and then follow it up with the same. I talked to my dispatcher and the next week 3300 miles. Just to prove I could run twice the miles they were dispatching me, I would run 700 miles in my 11 hour day and shut her down and sit.. then complain I was sitting. Things have gotten a little better, but I need a few more weeks to determine if I wont be in the same boat again.
They do have a few policies that I think are a joke: Layover pay.. esentially it is if you are sitting for 24 hours you get $75... the catch is, you can not have a load dispatched to your truck. So, if you have a load that loads in 36 hours, but it has been dispatched to your truck, you are still sitting, but no pay.. hat is a crock!
Detention pay is hit or miss... sometimes you get it sometimes not.. they claim it has to be "approved" as customer has to pay for it. Again.. I dont care who pays for it... Im sitting for no reason.. pay up!
Overall, I am happy with my experience with WEL, and I plan to stay with them indefinately, although if the miles don't get over 2500 I will look into running regional... after all that is basically what I am doing now, except not in the region where I live...wulfman75 Thanks this. -
You hit the nail on the head with that. Every thing you just said is the truth.

reading an unrelated post, I realized there is great value in a company that gives a crap about it's drivers...
WEL has APU units on all of its trucks, that is something to be said for comfort on the road, especially this time of year. When my APU went out on a 90 degree day, they put me up in a motel until it could be fixed (with a pool!)...
they allow inverters in your truck so you can have all the conveniences of home. Myself, I have a 32" LCD, DVD player, microwave, fridge, and convection oven that will cook a 12" frozen pizza or anything you can cook in an oven. They allow pets, so you can bring along your little buddy, and they have a rider policy (6 years old and up).
So, factor all of that in when you are looking for a place to drive.scottied67 and 123456 Thank this. -
Hey are there any wel drivers checking in now I have a couple of questions to ask about the whole outfit. I graduate Wednesday and that's all they are waiting on so I can set ul my orientation.
-
Yeah I'm a driver and also a trainer
-
What's goin on. I Bassicly have the job they are waiting on me to graduate what they told me was 450 a week for training n its 6 weeks but don't really care about the training pay. 30¢ A mile to start n 2weeks 2 days. I want to know the good bad n the ugly if u don't mind. And if my trainer n I get a load coming through my way are we allowed to stop for 20 or what. I'm in ga. Where do u run out of.
