Hello I have a Mack tractor truck and come to find out the bell housing is cracked. Is it okay to get it welded or do I need to change the entire thing?

Change, replace. I believe most of them are cast aluminum.
Gurjap, TX2Day, Deere hunter and 3 others Thank this. -
A 'lil JBWeld and you'll be good another 200 miles.

I would replace unless that’s not an option
Maybe depending on exactly how and where it’s broken I might consider welding…which is entirely possible just might cause to much distortion and therefore affect alignment of the input shaft/clutch/flywheelGurjap, 2Tap and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
The bolts on the top opened and there was a lot of vibration. We believe they opened because we got the clutch adjusted. Ended up being adjusted wrong and it became stuck. Followed by a lot of vibration. Vibration cause the bolts to break. And then the entire thing cracked

So essentially the bolts were not tighten down to the proper torque, worked their way loose and caused the crack - IS this right?
I don't understand how the bolts at the top would be affected by a clutch adjustment.
Replace.AModelCat and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
What I saw a lot of. Trans or clutch worked on. Bell housing bolts not torqued, often overtightened, or just stripped the holes in the flywheel housing.
Driver thinks clutch is acting funny, needs a clutch adjustment.
Tech usually doesn't see the 1" gap at the top of the bell housing and just adjusts the clutch.
Bell housing is already screwed by that time.
And the shop that did the work originally makes ridiculous excuses, like a "stuck clutch" caused the whole situation -
Change the housing. Cost to weld/repair properly, if even possible, will probably be on par with replacement.
