It's all good. I had great uncle in the Devil's Brigade in 1943. He volunteered to take out a German artillery battery. They took the battery but he was KIA by German 88. I just had to put an end to all that Canada bashing.

And that is why I chose never to cross the border in a CMV. Even though I could....

Crossed back over at Port Huron this morning. If it took 30 seconds I would be surprised, quickest I've ever crossed and the agent was great. Was a perfect way to end my cross border trucking days. The fire hasn't died down at all, I'm still done.

I want to emphasize that I had no intention of bashing Canada with this thread. If I was Canadian I would have said no more U.S for me. I should have titled it "No more border crossings" The point is the crossing and not the country. I also encourage everyone to read the laws governing customs. You will be amazed, basically once there the guards can do pretty much what they want and you have no recourse. It may never happen to you and the odds are low but if it does I promise it feels terrible.

But for me, I'm back in the States and you can all now consider me a strictly lower 48 trucker and proud of it.

Happy to hear you are home safe, E~ it's sad this had to happen; I have many good Canadian friends / allies, yet we tend to Skype or just talk/text even though they have rights to come into the States. Somehow this got to be a "sad state of affairs..." no pun intended.

Professed criminals don't even go through what you did. Sorry man.

You know what's truly sad? I could see my truck from the office and nobody ever checked the 7,000 gallon capacity chemical tanker trailer I was pulling. I mean what's the point? You check everything in my truck except the perfect smuggling spot? I would also like to know what I did suspicious or was it random. If it was random to me that makes it worse, " hey lucky you, for absolutely no reason we have decided to invade your privacy today".

MAN . . . have No idea on the "random" or what 'alerted' them to you! What IS crazy is that they didn't even search your tank?!?
Perhaps they are afraid of heights and/or catwalks???? #####!!
Chalk it up, I suppose. Still sucked.

Good you got back ok. I've been rethink border crossings for some time. I've heard too many stories just like yours. One of our guys got his laptop searched. Then they proceeded to treat him like a pedophile because he had sent flowers to an elementary school. His fiance is a kindergarten teacher. I've had them ask me some silly questions resently. How often do you cross here? "A few times a year". How many is a few? "5 or 6, I guess". Why not more than that? "Ummm, because I just go when the company sends me". Where else do you cross? "Usually at North Portal". What about Blaine? You crossed there twice on the same day. I so wanted to say "that was 3 years ago, and if you have all this info in your computer, why do you have to ask me?". It's all just silly. I'd rather avoid it altogether. But I've been lucky enough so far that nothing has happened to make me put my foot down and say no. I'm sure it will eventually. Now they have that new policy that you can't "present to customs within an hour of you being cleared by your broker". I don't know the reason for that, but my dispatcher was very specific about it. I guess the fines start at 2000 bucks and double each time your company violates it. And the crossing fee just raised from 10.75 to 13.50 and the annual fee with transponder thing went up to over 400 a year. No more than I crossed the company wasted money on that.

Seems to me like some of these guys are just trying to instigate an incident for some sort of "bonus".

I agree. Check everything you want but leave it the way you found it.
