I'm not sure about the Canadian side, but on the US side you can refuse to give passwords as it is considered protected free speech. They can and will confiscate your electronics but must return them within 30 days.....I know this from experience!!!

I got back from AK on Friday. I crossed at Sweetgrass. When I got back I went up to my boss and told him I am never doing that run again. I taught the new guy. That is the only reason I went. Before I left I told him I didn't want to go. This series of crossing wasn't bad. This trip the border guard at Beaver Creek tried to seal my trailer. I told him, you country, your laws, you have to do what you have to do. He sealed the back doors and then saw the side doors. He couldn't seal them so he ended up cutting the seals on the back off. He was very nice about everything. Our situation is just a bit different than most. Our inventory list of what is in the trailer is six pages long. No one I know whats to check that inventory. Heck it takes me three days to count it all.

The Canadian's that I talked to were pleasant and nice to me. Couldn't ask for nicer people. I have had issues before crossing the border from both sides. The truck and trailer searched for an item on the paperwork which could have been avoided if they just asked where it was. Spent up to 8 hours at one border before. Normal for me is 2.5 hours going from the US into Canada every single time. I have never gotten into Canada in under 2 hours. Back into the US, 5 minutes. It wears on me. Your rules are what gets me. The tractor I was driving was too long to drive in BC. The trailer and tractor were too long by 3 feet. I was glad the scales were all closed.

@Sportster2000, OK, I have a serious question here. Were you aware that the truck was too long before you left your point of departure, and if you were, then why did you agree to drive it. You not only had to enter Canada from the lower 48, you had to leave it again at Alaska, then enter again to come home.
Seems to me like if you knew you were going to be taking a chance, you should have just refused the trip. At least in that particular truck.
Of course, if you didn't find out until you were already there, then that is a different story. But you say all the scales were closed, so just how, when and where did you find out you were oversize?

I picked the truck up in AK and brought it back, I only drove it the one way this time. I did unfortunately know that the truck was too long before I left to pick it up. I found out it was too long when they sent it up there 1.5 years ago and I was taking measurements for it to get permits which we got. When I looked the at the last permits nothing on it said oversize. No restrictions or special routes. I voiced my concern but yet I still went. This was actually the 4th time that this particular truck and trailer went to and back from Alaska. This trip was the first that a person at a weigh station actually measured it. No ticket was given by them because I was not over length in that particular providence. Why did I do it? I honestly don't have a good answer for that. Part of me wants to say that I didn't want the new guy to get a ticket for something that he was completely unaware of. On the other side of that coin you could say that it is also his job to know that but he is still learning and we all learn as we go and as we make mistakes. I didn't want this to be his first mistake. Was it smart of me to do it? Not at all. Would my company pay the ticket? You bet they would have. The real question would be what legal hoops would I have to have gone through to get the truck out of BC if a ticket was received?

I'm going to assume your truck has a wheelbase that exceeds 244" (6.2 m)? The Long Wheelbase Truck Tractor permit (Chapter 5.3.7.A, Commercial Transport Procedures Manual) allows trucks with a wheelbase up to 285" (7.25 m) with a corresponding reduction in the trailer wheelbase and so long as the overall length does not exceed 23 m. Vehicles operating under such a permit are not allowed any other permits, i.e., no oversize nor over weight. This permit is really geared towards American trucks traversing BC to/from Alaska in recognition of the fact that U.S. trucks commonly have a longer wheelbase.

@Sportster2000, thanks for the clarification. When I went back and re-read my post, it sort of sounded like I was criticizing you. That was not the intent at all, I was just curious. Again, thanks.
I've never dealt with Canada at all, so I get curious about things...

Ironically, look at the immigrants Canada welcomes with open arms. As I recall, some of them boarded at Logan Int'l bound for Manhattan a few years back...
