    At 46 years old I have taken the leap. Started training at my local community college here in NC yesterday. 6 students were scheduled, 5 showed up. Obviously like most first days it was nothing crazy. Some paperwork then on to 4 different "modules" that consisted of safety related stuff. Every module is followed by a quiz that goes towards your final GPA. If you do not get an 80 or above they make you retake the following morning. This week will be all classroom, and then the following 5 weeks will be all pretrip, driving, etc.

    All of their training is based on the JJ Keller books.

    I have to say I had no idea what to expect for an $800 tuition. On one hand it seemed really cheap, on the other its a state funded school, so it could have been alright. The $800 included the DOT physical, drug test, books (including atlas) vest, rain gear, gloves, flashlight, and other items we have not received yet.

    The instructors are knowledgably and down to earth and the equipment, well lets just say its VERY well used internationals and we can leave it at that.

    I left my job with no regrets to do this, and I am excited to see where this next chapter takes me.

    • That's the cheapest I've heard of. Is it monday through Friday 40 hours a week so 240 hours total? To bad they don't take out of state students! I'm sure they're training on manual transmissions. Good luck.
    Forgot to ask how many instructors?

    Nothing wrong with learning on ‘well worn’ equipment, chances are that is what you’ll be assigned at your first couple jobs anyway.

    Good for them for using manuals. The trucks were probably donated by a local dealership, but that’s ok.

    Melton is a good choice for flatbed.
    `
    FFE (Frozen Food Express) is decent for refrigerated and can take dog.
    @Jenn72 works there.
    `
    USA Truck is good for dry van and can take dog.
