Y'all keep posting on your experiences with Werner. My son just got his CDL A today (good on him!!) and goes to orientation with Werner on Monday. Due to some past work issues, he only got pre-hires from Werner and US Express so he decided on Werner.....but, as everyone has said more than once, he's gotta start somewhere. I'm hoping he makes it thru orientation, gets a half-way decent trainer, and then makes it with W for 6-12 months. He's really working hard to turn his life around and he needs to be able to stay with them long enough to move on to a better outfit. Unlike most, he wants to driver Reefers....don't know if Werner will let him to start off, though.

You can manage to drive at normal speeds (read 50-70) on snowy roads..even ICY It´s just about how used to it you are.
Now slowing down too much might be downright deadly to those following you and not seeing you in time in a blizzard.
Mostly when the roads get slippery I look for snow to get a grip on...
*Relax and think beforehand and practice, practice, practice (easy for me to say with living where there´s slippery roads 9 months a year)
Now I don´t know if there´s any Ice/Slipery tracks for Trucks to train on but yes you can even do a evasive maneuver with a big rig even loaded by doing an opposite drift on purpose to make the truck turn better in emergency...sorta like a rally car...well not QUITE.
It´s going to be a loooonnng and slow drift not much sideways (too much sideways movement will get you unloaded) but long because of that and to keep the load all there.
We have former WW2 airfields iced for that and it´s nowadays mandatory to go a on acourse (And Pass it) to get your CDL....
There´s team of Finnish origin driving for Werner at www.usvaaputkeen.com , seems they are happy from the reports I´ve read.
Been contemplating of coming over myself too not necessarily for Werner thou but definitely not JBHUNT -
well fyrstar how you liking werner??are you still with them.have you gotten through training yet??many questions just wondering if they are treating you better than they did my bf and me when we were on team werner.

Well, things are going okay. I had a family emergency, and they shipped me home that same day.
I'll be going back to continue my training next Sunday, so we can hope it goes well.
I wish I could meet some of you in person, like I said in another post you're like a family to me. You've helped me through some scary times!
I'll probably get a new trainer after it's all done with. Til Sunday, there's not much more I can really report on.
Hugs to everyone!

How did you like Carol and did you operate as a team? What equipment were you running in?

hello fyrstar,
i am a former werner driver and i want to say just relax and dont get too caught up in reading so many of the negative post on this forum. i was with werner for 8 months, 2 training and 6 pulling their dollar general trailers. i finally had to leave the dollar general account due to constant pain in my knees associated with unloading the trailers, having said that, i will say that
most all my experiences with werner were very professional and i left the company in good terms. reason i did leave was due to less pay if i transfered to another division within werner, i could not accept going from .32cpm to .26cpm driving 48 states. hang in there and take it one day at a time, as with any job you will have both good and bad days, but if you hang in there it will
get better and you can always move on to another company once you get alittle experience. goodluck to you. -
so just think as you were sitting arround waiting you were still getting money. So its not all that bad. I just finished orientation for Werner in Allentown PA and I am getting sent out to Ohio to find a trainer because I don't feel like waiting a week. About the snow..... Generally you should slow down. If for some reason you see your trailer start to slide get on the fuel a little. This will more or less make the truck out run the trailer and it should track back in behind the tractor. Just remember not to freeze up. Stay relaxed react to what the truck is doing and you will be fine.
Good Luck -
You also gotta remeber,if your trailer is comin around, its comin around fast..And usually a trailer is comin around cause you are tryin to slow down fo a reason,so you may not be able to get on the gas if somthin is infront of you...Dont wanna hit anybody/anything...The best thing to do is try to always keep yourself in a position to handle the truck safetly..Alot of accidents with trucks are the drivers errors..There are also alot of myths about how to handle each situation..The best winter driving advice is just go slow.....Take your time...You shouldnt put yourself in a position that you are goin so fast that you jack knife when you slow down,or you cant stop...That goes for drivin in the rain too...Well,goodluck to you...

I'm going back on Monday, so we'll see what happens.
I hope to get on a regional Dollar General account, but we'll see.
How did things go with Carol and I? Hmmmm......
Well, the thing is that she is a nice person. I disagree with several things, like her policy on cell phone and radio. She said that after two weeks, I would be able to use both. However, after said two weeks, I still hadn't "earned the privileges", even though she had no complaints on driving, I'd never missed a turn, and pushed hard to get distance.
When she woke up, it was generally an hour after she wakes up that I get to hear her cuss about things, from ashes on the floor from my cigarettes to not being able to sleep well because I was hitting too many bumps on the road.
On the other hand, she bought me sodas during the day, told good stories, and was a good conversationalist. She never complained about me asking questions and answered them all politely (unless it was after she woke up), and was a good trainer.
She drove me to the bus station, and asked me to keep her informed. In fact, I need to call and give her an update on my family emergency.
Final trainer score (assuming I dont get her back when I return):
Starting: 100
Aggressive waking behavior: -15
Answering questions: +10
Teaching skills: +10
Consistency in rewards for behavior: -10
Compromising: -5
Safety (seatbelts, restraints, etc): -5
Caring attitude: +5
Final score: 90 -
Frystar,
Keep us updated and I am sure you will get your training done eventualy be it with Carol or someone else. One more thing; do the Freightliner Centuries have the Detroits or Cats in them?
