and you're just finding this out?Werner has been doing this when i got trained by them. All mega carriers do this.Im sure FMCSA knows this.At some point a driver tipped them off but they're still doing it.FMCSA is no more into safety then the carriers are. It's all about revenue, anybody with half a brain knows that.

The thing is, there is nothing that says rookies have to have a trainer AT ALL. If you require that a trainer must have 5 years exp, a company could theoretically say .. ok, we'll just send rookies out without a trainer. All they need is a CDL. So why would the experience level of a trainer even matter? Regardless of who is doing the training, im pretty sure that any kind of trainer is infinitely more than what the gov requires. Come to think of it, does a trainer even need a CDL?

What the trainer thing probably comes down to is these two things, they can make money and, insurance/litigation reasons. When they get sued, they can always say, well, we train our drivers when the get hired. They tell the unknowing sheeple in tv land, that believe everything they hear on tv, "look how safe we are, its not our fault".

That video should be turned over to their safety dept. They may not do anything but its worth a try.Surprised the person doing the video did this without the trainer catching him.

Actually yes, trainers do have to carry a CDL. All I am saying is that most of these mega carriers should require a trainer to have at least 5 years OTR to become a trainer. I know there is nothing that says how much experience is required. Yes companies could send fresh meat out with no worries in their minds. What it all comes down too is insurance. Insurance will for the most part dictate whether a driver will be hired or not. If you have no experience hauling over weight loads 110,000lbs. +, that companies insurance may not want to insure you being hired. I know. It happened to me when I first started driving. I was looking to get hired on with a small company driving a dump trailer and the owner told me that his insurance would allow him to hire me. Either way the FMCSA needs to honestly put in a regulation regarding training. That's just how I feel about it.

legally, you can drive at 21, and maybe even 18, but industry standard is above that age for many reasons

again, whats with this "if its legal"? these companies worry about legalities after covering their rears, but they will send out two blind people to drive a rig, and thats about as dangerous as one can get

and then when they get all sorts of log violations, safety violations, etc, they enact MORE stringent controls on the regular drivers, and the cycle continues

    (much like gun laws)

That's not only scarey it shouldn't be legal. 5 years min. before you can train , certified by the state or maybe even the fed's. If a company is gonna train it's own then the "trainer" should be made to log his time on the bottom line , and sit in the passenger seat and TRAIN....If the trainee gets in a spot or needs to watch..then you trade spots....no way should companies that train be allowed to run 'teams"

I agree, and that should be certainly the case for an instructor and non-CDL holder on a permit. 5-years minimum experience for anyone training. But (and this has been discussed ad nausem...) exactly how long must you hold a trainee's (CDL holder) hand driving down a rural interstate with little traffic? My carrier requires at least 30,000 miles (6 to 8 weeks) with a trainer before even considering turning them loose, and maybe the last third is mostly making sure they understand paperwork, logging, maintenance and more experience bumping docks.
