You know its funny, I'm new to this trucking forum, and its good to hear experience drivers here and none experience drivers talk about whats good and bad. I'm ex-military U.S. ARMY MEDIC, I changed my career to trucking, and I'm out of school for 3 weeks and the economy is so bad, I have called so many trucking companies up. At first shaffer wanted to hirer me right out of school, but I didnt want to committ to anybody unitl I checked them out, and speak to my other half???lol, I wanted to do my home work on these companies. But nobody wants to hirer me because I live in long island, ny. My 1st application went to werner and they said yes to me, but shaffer and everybody else except lisa motors said ok. Im 44 yrs old, my background is squeakie clean, i have all my endorsments, and I know I have to put in my time, my family understands that. with out experience I will never get a local job here in long island, ny. Its all about the insurance company. I HAVE A QUESTION SINCE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WERNER? I HAVE HEARD GOOD AND BAD, AND I KNOW NOT TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO JUST WANT TO COMPLAIN. Im a worker and a go getter.....but I have to go with werner, they are the only company that will hirer me in the long island region, can you tell me if you can request a ex- military trainer, and the military package did you apply for that $ 9000.00 I here its paid monthly.........Im all ears........

You should ask a recruiter about that, they would be able to better tell you what the company can do for you. Just do your homework and ask questions. Good luck to you!

Hey Tara,
Im just curious as to how youre running things on the tat side of the house. Im thinking of working for Werner and also doing a traveling tats sort of thing. I realize a "second job" has to be logged, and would greatly appreciate any insight into how you're dealing with that.

That one actually was pretty easy. I had told Werner about it before I'd even gotten into Orientation. I showed them some of the magazines I'd been in and they stated that so long as I wasn't doing the additional work under the Werner name and away from the truck, there wasn't going to be an issue.
Basically, they just don't want to lose face in case I mess up is what I gathered.
However, in an upcoming issue of the Pilot Challenge magazine, they're going to link me with Werner and tattooing somehow - which actually got approved by corporate. Go figure.

IT IS NICE TO HEAR FROM BAD WHAT REALLY CAN BE AT WERNER IF YOU WORK HARD AND FOLLOW THE RULES. NICE POST BADINFLUENCE! I'M SURE OTHERS WHO ARE NEWBEES SUCH AS MYSELF ARE HAPPY TO HEAR POSITIVES FROM AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER WHO KNOWS HOW TO WORK THE WERNER SYSTEM. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE GREAT POST!

SUP ALL!?
I did the cdl school and went to werner. Couldn't finish the 300 hours mostly because I missed home so much. My trainer was a fat ####### slob however!
But My SDM (student driver manager) was quick to get me off when i had enuff.
I also heard alot of guys getting sent home after their 300 hrs. After all, Werner got the Govt reimbursement or w/e for training you, no work go home......
But the whole more than a number stuff, blah I took a week off unpaid and they dropped my insurance like a used rubber. Sent me my Cobra info.
use em and get home asap is my advice.
I got lucky and landed a local propane gig, along with serving civil papers on the weekend
Good luck all! -
Too bad that it didnt work for you, but then again Werner and the big carriers aren't for everyone.
Interesting about the insurance, they must have thought you'd left the company to do that. Sending the COBRA info is the law as you probably know. -
what is the cobra stuff you are referring too?
