Let's simplify this. Per diem is taken off your gross before any taxes are taken out, THEN what wages are left are taxed. This benefits the company greatly because they pay less taxes...thats a fact. This can hurt an employee in a couple different ways:
1- Your social security and unemployment is based on what you earn...per diem is not part of your taxable gross earnings. Work on a per diem program twenty years and you will definitely see a difference in what your social security check will be as opposed to not being on per diem.
2- Workers compensation is also based on your gross taxable wage. If you get hurt (god forbid) the amount you draw will be affected because all that money that has been coming off the top is not counted.
3- This *may* hurt your approval on a bank loan as the gross taxable income is lower because the PD comes off the top.

In my opinion per diem is a legal outlet for a company to save big money, for instance 1,000 drivers that a company doesn't have match taxes for on say maybe 50-75 bucks a week per driver. It also makes a person who works for a $iht paying company appear to be "taking home" more than they actually are. Some people like it, some don't....but you can be CERTAIN of one thing..it is not for the employee's benefit. You get screwed every way imaginable and all of a sudden they are interested in your "well being" pushing the hell out of per diem?..... HELLO..... :evil3::smt017

It' really very simple to figure out, is the company offering this because they want to keep you happy and making money ,OR are THEY making or saveing money on it ? I think we all know the answer

Reducing your paycheck due to per diem is unique to the trucking industry.

First of all the trucking companies bend the truth. Yes they have lost the "payroll" deduction. But they still deduct the $$ they gave you as per diem as an operating expense ... so they have lost no deduction to the bottom line. But they do save the SS/FICA payouts.

I came from the tech industry. If you sign on as contractor, commute more than 50 miles, some companies will allow you to elect to have part of your pay provided as pre tax per diem. But they never impact your contracted gross. They shift their accounting from payroll to expense, they save FICA payments and you get a tax free income ... everyone is a win/win

The per diem fraud committed by my longtime OTR employer caused me to quit in early June after waiting about six months for my vacation pay to accrue. I'm just thankful I don't live my life the way that company's lying, thieving, scumbag-of-a-president does.

If u go on per diem it can hurt u in the following ways unemployment compensation,
workers compensation as well as your social security will be less. Thats because what is reported as income is what u make after they take out the per diem.

I don't see how it could hurt you in the unemployment because most likely you will top out on your benefit based on your income well before you hit the amount that your taxable income was reduced by your per diem pay. As far as social security goes I'm pretty sure the same would apply. Besides, if you took that non taxed income and invested it in your 401k you would be much better off than worrying about the social security payments that who knows if you'll even get to receive due to the lack sustainability in social security itself.

9/11/01 401's and everything else took a slam because of idiots on wall street thinking that because some morons flew aircraft into buildings the world came to an end! 2008 the economy collapses and 401's took another slam! Yah keep putting into those unstable things!
one thing not mentioned in the last few pages about per diem scams is that your W-2 will show a big difference from that pay stub!

This means when you go to get a loan for that new motorcycle, car, pick up truck, boat road tractor or house your income will not be what you thought it was and the bank or loan company when they see your tax reports declines the amount you need for what they say you really need or can have which will be less than what you really need!

Paid per diems are a scam. UNLESS the company puts $200 in your hand on Monday and you turn in $200 in receipts for food and motels on friday (this used to be done for drivers back up to the early 90's) , they do NOT benefit the driver but the company in large savings from having to pay taxes at a time when America really does need these taxes and these libtards scream about the "rich" getting richer but this scam lets these bottom feeders get away with what they are after! Oh the irony!

Oh, an unemployment application that gets turned down can be taken to arbitration and if you're gifted with the gift of gab and proof of the company "screwing you" then you just MIGHT get that unemployment and then that loss of paid taxes can hurt you!
