It wasn't *mandatory* at the school I just finished to even fill out an app. They did strongly recommend it, and I did fill out four. But the four were of *my* choosing.
Before today (when I passed my CDL exam), I have had *three* mailings from Werner. I didn't even have my CDL yet, and they're spamming me.
I've not heard at all from the other carriers - aside from the pre-hire letter, of course - nor do I expect to.
And I've got a job offer for a local company. Sure, the pay ain't great - but I'm home every night. On top of that, I'm a bottom of the barrel rookie. ZERO experience. While I'd LIKE to take over as CEO of a company, something tells me that's a bit unlikely.
I'll talk to the locals, probably Monday. I'll call the other companies I already have my app in with - also, probably Monday. We'll see how things go.
but I digress. Making the filling out of an application to a particular company - provided you are not sponsored - is wrong.. and I wonder if it's not even questionable legally. It *certainly* casts heavy doubts on the school's "independence".

I really like my instructors and trainers..... but I kinda knew going in that I would not like the school itself.... I accepted that fact before I started so I think it has made it easier to deal with some of the stupidity.
Below is what the paper that was given to me looked like (note that this was not given to me until the second day of class even though I had paid cash 3 weeks earlier)....
1. COC FORM
2. DMV H-6
3. Commerical Permit
4. HS Diploma or school transcripts
5. Medical Green Card
6. Physical Long Form
7. Dot drug screen
8. Werner and Stevens Apps.
Werner and Steven applications are due back no later than 4/11/08. Regardless if you are considering employment with these two companies or not, these applications are mandatory and ar needed back. If all paperwork is not turned in to Kerry by 4/15/08 you will be dropped from the class!!!! Please do not wait until the last minute to get your paperwork to Kerry if you have the paperwork already turn it in...
NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

- Now, not only did I have to fill out the applications... I also had an issue with not "having" my high school diploma.... like I know where that thing is 27 years after I got it!...... I offered to bring sealed transcripts from the university that would show my B.A. and M.A. degrees but she just looked at me blankly and said there was some kind of "ability to benefit" rule that required copies of my HIGH SCHOOL diploma.....
The other items on the list were also somewhat amusing....
- the first item where it says COC FORM was actually a requirement for me to pay them $20 because they supplied me with the form that I took to my DOT Physical....
- the third item was our permits, which were due 4/15/08 - but we began our class on 4/7/08 and were scheduled to be in the classroom LEARNING THE PERMIT INFORMATION for two weeks (4 hours a day) until 4/18/08.....
- when I turned in the second item, the DMV H-6 there was an accident code and a sobriety code (from when I was rear ended while sitting at a light a few years ago)... I asked what these codes meant because I was certainly never considered at fault and no one had been drinking in either of the vehicles..... and as I am sure you can guess........ no one in the entire school knew how to read the actual report..... what a suprise
- my final issue with this wonderful document was the DOT Physical... I was told I had to go to a particular doctor for my physical.... however, when I looked up information on this "doctor" I found out he was a Chiropractor.... not an MD. Yes, I know this is legal.... however, I would prefer any doctor performing a physical on me to be an actual MD.... I am NOT a fan of chiropractors....it is a personal thing..... when I told the school that I did not think I should be REQUIRED to use a chiropractor they told me they had been using this doctor for YEARS and he was a medical doctor and NOT a Chiropractor.... I told them that I would use him if they could prove he was what I considered a "real" doctor....... they called their wonderful DOCTOR and found out that he is really a CHIROPRACTOR....... surprise, surprise.......
I just went back to my class and left it at that......

Well, now that my school/mill has seen fit to give out my unlisted phone number I have had to come up with an actual tactic.........
When they call I tell them that I have heard that they are a pretty good company to work for (I am the world's worst liar but on the phone I can usually get through it) ....... I then tell them I am actually very interested in seeing what they have to offer........ I then ask them if I can get a copy of the contract I would be signing at their orientation...... for some unknown reason they always say "Of course!"........ I then give them my PO Box address and tell them I will call them back as soon as I get the contract to look over...........
They never call again, and the only contract that has arrived in my box is Schneider......... surprise, surprise........

My husband was telling me that they probably get a kickback, from having those lying fast talking recruiters come in and talk to the students, got my husband hook line and sinker. I think that the schools have to know about their speals,maybee it is that they just dont care, but in my opinion I thinnk it also makes the school look bad, when the students get out there and realize how much bull they where feed!!!

My wife is getting her CDL in a mill over here in Vegas. This past Sat. they had a job fair and there were three Werner trucks. They just wouldn't take no for an answer. They felt my wife owed it to them that she fill out an application. We got financed our self and when she's out will be training with me. But they insisited that because she is going to this mill that she has to fill out the app. I looked at the recruiter and just smiled and asked her to ummmmmmmmmmm
She got the message. And if they call my house I will tell them I am on the DO NOT CALL LIST!!! Know what I mean?

Schneider knows a class act when they hear or
see one.

The ONLY thing which surprises me is,
Schneider hasn't sent a limo to fetch you ........
yet.
My guess is they want you in a bad way ---
and that's GOOD.

Its amazing how...... if you are what THEY are looking for........ they are very accomodating...........
I'm still thinkin though........ not in any big hurry....... don't think truckin is going to shut down anytime soon!
I'm finally learning (in my old age) that patience has it's good points...........
