I have to actually THANK YOU for this post of horror. I am currently going through A.I.T. in Las Vegas, and they push for Werner and Swift.
I was actually kinda down about getting D.Q.'d from Werner for a license suspension back in 1992.
Now I am trying to get applications for U.S. Express and anyone else out there that hires noobs fresh out of school.
With A.I.T. I HAD a choice of 4 companies. Werner, Swift, Covenant and Stevens. Stevens isn't hiring out here in the western states, so that was a wasted application.
Thanks again for the heads up on Werner. Now I just have to keep reading on Swift and Covenant!

You sir are a writer trapped in a truckers bodylater_dude Thanks this. -
Those are usually the bottom level carriers, you could probably do much better just looking around, and reading thru the forum for more options. -
The way AIT gets you is by offering the pell grant and 2 Student loans. They then "gaurantee" that you won't have to sign a contract, and tell you that these companies pay off the student loans for you, and if you get a better offer from another company, you can walk away and go to the other company, "but make sure they have tuition reemburment".
I am origanally from Illinois, right on the "Double Nickle" in Pontiac. I have talked to a couple companies back there, and looks like I have to get 6 months in before they will take me, SO, I am looking at 6 months of one of the bottom feeders, then I can start moving up, if I don't get the stench on me and get the lable from 1 of those companies.
I still have more than 2 months left in school, so I figure it will give me the time I need to stalk these forums and find out what company is going to be the best for me.
Honestly, after being a Union Ironworker for the past 14 years, I WANT to go to a decent flatbed company, that way I will still have a chance of seeing some of the iron going up around the country.
Thanks for the reply and the advice on finding better companies! -

I agree with all that has been said about those companies you're considering and Maverick would definately be worth looking into. Not sure if they're hiring those fresh out of CDL school, though. As far as I know, Schneider is hiring fresh outs at the Dallas OC. Check posts by Bigcove on the Schneider forum. He is going through orientation there now. I just finished orientation with them in Charlotte but they're not taking anyone with less than 6 months experience there. I start driving for them Wednesday and so far I'm real impressed with the way they are set up to make the company and their drivers money. J.B. Hunt is another one I would stay away from. KLLM used to be a good company and probably still is if you want to lock yourself into a leased truck. At present, I wouldn't recommend that. Somewhere in the Truckers Report Forum there's a post about a Swift driver going berserk and destroying his truck. He's probably in prison now but looking at two sides of the story, it takes something pretty bad from a company to make one of their drivers go to that extreme.

Theres bad at every company, it is just a matter of which suit you the best. Personally I would stay away from Steven's, CRST.
