It used to be that way with cars when got my first driving license 40+ years ago. I learned and tested on a manual so I had no restrictions; then again, automatic transmissions weren't as common then as now.

What's wrong with being a steering wheel holder? That's exactly what I consider myself to be. No problem on my end.

Their maintenance costs for the autos are less than for the manuals. And they make money.

Had a 2014 Volvo IShift auto that got 6mpg.
Had a 2012 FL with a 10sp that got 8mpg with a bigger motor.
Autos do not necessarily get better MPG.
Nice to drive though, if you are in heavy traffic like LA. -
In a experienced drivers hand, autos get worse milage.
In all cases autos are more unreliable, more expensive to maintain, and bring a lower resale. -
Or Chicagoland during rush hour...
