It's fairly easy to change a CB meter light. Radio Shack sells a mini 12v bulb with leads for under $2. Open the CB up and you'll see the existing meter bulb and leads. Easiest way is just cut the existing leads... splice the new leads onto the existing leads... cover the connections with electrical tape... and stick the new bulb on the meter using hot glue or whatever that seems to work. Definitely not something you want to pay a local 2-way radio shop $80 an hour to mess with!

Thanks, but I read it is harder on Galaxys. It is a 419 Axial Lead wheat grain bulb. It looks kind of like a small old style glass fuse. It has a small bare wire on each end that is soldered onto the dimmer PCB behind the meter. Apparently The dimmer PCB is a small board held to the back of the meter with 4 screws.
I sure wouldn't pay some one at a "communications" shop that has never seen a CB $85 an hour to solder on a bulb. The whole meter only costs a few bucks. It seems there was a one hour minimum even if I took the part out for him and it was a 5 minute job. I don't think so. Everything here is a ripoff because they're used to sticking it to the big companies. I would try it myself or send it out. I would like to find out just what was done to this radio from the shop I bought it from anyway.
I'm not in a hurry now as it is usually zero and snowing. I guess its time to buy Electronics for Dummies and a better soldering gun. -
Many radios changing a bulb can be a real problem sounds like yours an't that bad.

Your setup actually sounds pretty easy since the existing bulb has bare leads coming out of both ends of the bulb. I'm sure the existing bulb is 12 volts. I'd just buy one of those 12v mini lamps with leads from Radio Shack and hook it up direct to the bare leads from the existing bulb. You wouldn't even need to remove the existing bulb. Chances are it will work... if not you're only out 2 bucks or so.
Here's a link to the bulb you'd need:

Thanks, but I think this is the one it takes, although I haven't looked yet.

A couple online radio forums have posts about it and that is what online dealers show. Other brands have the ones with the leads and places even have the LED replacements. -
I'm sure you will be more than happy dealing with them. I know I have been with the radios/Accessories I have bought.
Doug is one of the best and after repairing two (Twins) Galaxy 979's that had the super whack packed with super recieve upgrade refrained from the normal bashing one would expect to hear. He simply apologized for the misfortune and stated they would have been better out of the box. They now IMO are two of the best talking/sounding 979's out there.Last edited: Mar 8, 2011

ID,
Do you remember what he charges to undo a Whack Hack and super receive and how long it took? Did he have any trouble fixing it? Of course your radio is a CB and mine is an export. And no, folks, I don't stray off the CB band. My radio is going to have to wait for awhile. I am thinking of sending it to Al at Sparky's or perhaps Doug since he worked there. -
BESIDE the 2sc2999 mod what can you do for receive
