Overall I think the dumbest thing I ever did was leave the Air Force.

Watched a driver flip the air switch for the PTO without stepping on the clutch. Even dumber yet was that he was oblivious to the 20 seconds of grinding that went on until I yelled at him.

Stupidest thing of ever done since getting into trucking?

Thinking at a year and a half into my driving career that I could do a lease purchase with a relatively new start up despite all the recommendations that i had gotten from drivers here on ttr about it being a huge mistake. Then placing my wife and children in a position of being faced with homelessness when our home was foreclosed on.

driving without any sleep. Or putting weight on the hand brake to check my brake lights, and forgetting I did so and wondering why the truck won’t move.

My previous manager always said: "Do not leave the highway when going thru Louisiana".
I did it once... making a uturn on somebody's driveway in middle of a major swamp was NOT a lot of fun...

    Probably the ‘cure all’

The worst things I’ve done in trucking involve making decisions to quickly.

Never feel pressured. GOAL. Stop and think first.

I’ve done a lot of stupid things. Put tarps on backwards. Left the shipper and got on down the road without the BOL. Pulled into truckstop’s car parking and then wondered how to get out. Etc

Seen a fellow leaving a truck lot one time and T-Boned a cement jersey barrier.
Absolutely destroyed the frontend of his truck.
Don't know if I'd call it stupid so much as I'd call it being complacent.
    He was Mad as heck!!

i do that all the time sometimes even several times per day..........but i have a clutch type hot shift pto :p

i think the worst i did was out on a rual gravel road right after a fresh snow. putting the first set of tracks down the road. i go to turn into a approach to pull into where i was going. couldn't tell exactly where it was. but i thought i knew. well the snow was blown flat across the ditch and where i thought the approach was, was actually the ditch i turned in and dropped the front of the truck in the ditch. fuel tanks about a inch from the ground. yeah i was off by like 10 feet. so i was stuck in the ditch and the worst part was i intentionally turned there. i didn't slide in the ditch i turned into the ditch.
