They will pay you on a 1099 instead of a W-2. Meaning you have no taxes taken out or benefits and you're considered an "independent contractor' but without the perks of actually being independent. Then at tax time the following year you'll be left holding the bag for ALL income tax owed to the IRS. It's a scheme designed to save them as much money as possible.

Then not mention they'll expect you to run illegal.

Hey Nightwind, I would definitely not get discouraged and give OD a shot. I just started at my local terminal 2 weeks ago PT on the dock at night and after 30 days they are going to start training me for my CDL to be a combo driver. FWIW I don't know a single person there...just took the initiative to call and go for an interview. Good luck!!

We are in the time of year when things should start picking up for the holiday season. Even if you can only get on an extra board somewhere, it will get your foot in the door!

Good luck on your hazmat test! If you studied, it's not that hard at all.
Our school had everyone wait until after we passed our CDL road test before taking the hazmat test/endorsement.
Their (valid) reason was... if the examiner see's that you already have hazmat endorsement passed on your permit, it opens you up to being questioned on hazmat-related question/situations during your road test. Typically they won't, but they can.

Does your school have IL CDL testers/examiners come to your school's lot for testing in Nov, or do you have to go to a IL CDL state testing site?
Just curious, as my school always had 2 IL state examiners come test us on the school's lot. (Pre-trip, skills course, and road test)

As far as applying at ODFL now, before you even get your CDL, I think ODFL won't even take your app, and tell you to come back after you have your CDL. Just based on my experience. They are not like megacarriers that do "pre-hires", or even close. Just being honest.

Hey Cajun, they will currently take people without even a permit for their training program depending on the terminal. As a matter of fact, when I was hired a few weeks ago the Terminal Manager had just received an email stating that they were going to be ramping up their classes from 1 to 2 per month.

the school does have 2 state reps come out to test and they're in the Yard every Monday. I have to follow my driving schedule, though, which is written out by one of the women at the school. I was originally supposed to test 10/28,but I cant pay off my remaining tuition to the school until 11/1,so I asked the woman who does the scheduling if she could move my test date up possibly a week or two.(i cant test unless ive paid the school in full) she re-scheduled my test day for 11/25 for some reason,a full month away. ive been trying to get the woman to move my test date closer, because It makes absolutely no sense for me to wait a month to test when I'm ready to test right now and will have paid in full in a week....sigh...she says the schedule is too full to do so,and asked me to speak with a different employee.so I go to the truck yard tomorrow to talk to the other employee about my schedule...That is the long wind version of whats going on. I would hate t wait a month for no good reason, hopefully the schedules wont be too full for me to get my test date moved back.

As far as applying Monday, if they take my app then fine,if not I'll try again after I test. it cant hurt to try :)

Sounds to me like you may be being "punished." Try talking to this schedulers supervisor.
