What am I missing about Swift?

My husband signed that contract.....it wasn't a contract for indentured servitude it was a 0% loan that would be paid by automatic withdrawel from pay checks AND payment to the driver by Swift.

If you go work elsewhere after Swift and the loan isn't fully paid off...then you make payments. If you stay with Swift..at the end of 13 months you will have paid the loan and they will have reimbursed half of the loan back to you. At the end of 26 months they'll have reimbursed the full loan to you.

Now....they didn't charge a dime to school me.......I'm just that wonderful!!!! No actually it's because they'll train spouses free. (I like the idea that I'm special and that's why they trained me free lol)

You can relocate prior to schooling....but unless you relocate they will not let you school out of your area. We relocated so we could train in Phx instead of San Antonio.

 

I scrimped and saved about ten years ago, drove taxi-cabs at night, to sock away $1700, which paid for CDL training at a community college. I then went to Stevens' Transoprt out of Dallas, turned down their offer for reimbursement, and drove for 22 cents a mile for 6 months, then went to JB Hunt for 37 cents a mile, I incurred no penalty because Stevens did not pay for my school. Going from 22 cents to 37 was a HUGE raise.

As far as Swift goes, or any other carrier that hires people fresh out of the CDL mills, well, we all have to start somewhere. You put in your time there, and move on as soon your experience makes you more marketable to the higher paying carriers. The only company I've ever encountered that hired students that a driver could build himself a nice career at is Schneider, and I'm not sure if they are hiring students anymore.

 

So could you throw a bone (CDL prep training) to someone looking at going to school in PHX (Swift). What would you do better for the prep?

I think I understand this question to mean, "What can I do to prepare for school?"

Get a list of stuff you will need for school and living in a motel for three weeks. Have money for food, personal supplies, etc...and maybe a little entertainment on the weekends.

If you are going to be getting an Arizona license, go online and see if you can get the Commercial Driver's manual on your computer. Some states have them online, some don't. Most of the CDL manuals have all the endorsement material in them already. For a fully endorsed CDL (barring passenger-carrying vehicles) you would read General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Tankers, Doubles/Triples and Hazmat. It's a lot of stuff to absorb, but most of it is common sense stuff. In most driver manuals, there are little quizzes at the end of each chapter. Use them. They really do help.
