Long story short, was 10 miles from the receiver which was literally a quarter mile away from the truck stop I was leaving the truck at for home time. Ran out of hours on my 14 and was just barely going to be able to squeak it in before receiving closed. Took the HOS violation to get it delivered and go home. I know, illegal, I should have just rode it out and delivered legally, etc.. Was literally running for 20 hours trying to make use of split sleeper, etc. while stuck on the side of the interstate for 4 hours waiting on roadside service to show up for a repair. I was fed up and told safety, this load is getting delivered and I'm going home today. Probably a dumb move on my part, but it is what it is.

That leads to this question, what are some signs/hints that a termination is coming? Obviously we drive some very expensive equipment and the company wants it to come back in good shape without having to be recovered, so they won't ever call and say, "hey, you're getting fired so put a smile on your face and take this load to Chicago for us and leave the truck at HQ". First load back after home time tomorrow for me is being routed to HQ for a 'safety meeting'. Is an HOS violation typically something that would be a fireable offense? Clean record and in good standing with my company prior. Is 'safety meeting' just the typical way of getting a truck to the yard before terminating? I have 3 years experience, perfect CSA score, etc., so I'm not worried about finding employment. I just don't want to look silly dragging everything out of the truck in the yard and cramming it in a rental if I can just clean the truck out tonight while I'm home.

Your probably getting fired. Yes, those are all signs. It’s not 100% though but HOS is one of the biggest infractions there are for most companies because insurance makes a massive deal out of it.

Whatever you do, don’t abandon the truck. Bring it back in good order and see what’s up. Having an abandonment on top of a blatant HOS violation is a sure way to not get hired by any reputable company again.

Definitely no intentions on abandoning the truck for me. I reckon it's time to start submitting some applications and packing a little lighter for the trip up there.

Or, you could just be going into the office for a "Safety Meeting", commonly called a "### Chewing", with some very serious talking about how your conduct might have caused more serious problems. Then they will give you another load and send you on your way with a warning that another such incident will bring termination.

Flip of the coin on whether you get canned.

Only reason I doubt I'm getting off with a 'come to Jesus meeting' as my parents always called it is because it's a 2 hour deadhead to pickup and an hour deadhead from delivery to HQ after a 250 mile load. Seems like that'd be a very costly meeting. But, maybe I'll be surprised.

Totally agree. How they are handling it is pretty much exactly how I handle these things. Whether the driver is canned or not most times depends on their own attitude and approach to the “safety meeting”. Also, if you don’t get canned then insurance likes to see a safety meeting was done to rectify the problem.

When something like this happens you can tel if a driver went home and actually thought about it and values their position at the company or not. The ones with attitude or no regrets need fired anyway and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Three hours is nothing to the company. Just a way to cover costs to get you in for the meeting. Now, if the just deadheaded you in from home, i'd be more concerned. Sure, they could be doing this to avoid a truck recovery, but with them trusting you with another load, seems they trust you enough to get you to the "Safety Meeting".
Hope thing's go well for you and thing's go in your favor.

if your fuel card is turned off. or small amount is on there. like just enough to get the truck to term or they route your next load to term after home time. good chances your toast. but just remember one thing. truck driving is a give and take world. it wont always go your way. you will miss stuff and be late or have to change stuff. just how it is sometimes.

Those are not unusual amounts of deadhead when prioritizing a route. When the carrier needs to put a truck somewhere, you have to compromise. If you worked for me and the rest of your walking on water story was true, you'd get one free pass and I'd wear it out every time you asked for anything else.
