And those of us who run out west in the HORRIBLE states of CA, OR and WA feel the same way about NY, NJ, CT and the rest of those god forsaken places.
I'll take all the western passes at 105,000 # and 16'+ wide in the middle of a blizzard over driving on any interstate in the northeast in a rental car.
What are the most dangerous roads / mountain passes in the lower 48

Any hill can be a problem if you're too fast for the situation, passes usually have plenty of warning whether it's signs or on the cb. I look forward to them anymore as it at least breaks up some of the boredom.

Lucar you said it best. The Baker Grade going into NV out of CA on 15 is another that will bite you in the Butt if you do not watch out. At least there you can let it roll if needed at the bottom and your in NV. One that does not get the respect but it needs it but it Deserves it I feel is Fancy Gap on I81 I have seen that sucker go from clear as a Bell to Fogged in quicker than a Lot Lizard can remove her Clothing. When that happens I swear everyone panics and Slams on the brakes regardless of HOW FAST THEY ARE RUNNING and look the HELL OUT.
No what happened that night on Donner was not Fun at all however I got out of the problem by keeping my cool. However you have never had Fun on a mountain pass until a OR trooper passing you Loops it right in front of you on the 5 just south of Medford when he Hit Black ICE at 2 AM I ran a lot of nights as I was a Team Driver and Dad got the Day Shift. Sucker Loops in the Hammer Lane I know if I hit the Brakes I am going to Jackknife and take him out however he is spinning all over the place. Kick the Clutch that way if needed I can get power back he spins I FLOOR IT he missed me by maybe 2 feet on the back end of the trailer. I stopped ASAP checked on him as he hit the guard rail and asked if he needed anything he went A CLEAN PAIR OF UNDERWEAR AND A SMOKE PLUS A DRINK. I was like I would join you if I did not fear losing my CDL with the last one. Waited for the Meat Wagon he was loaded up and I left As soon as I could get out of there.JR80 and CenutryClass Thank this. -
US 160 Wolf Creek is a cake walk, it get's it's bad rap because of the song, keep it to the speed limit and your fine
US 160 La Veta EB looks tame, but it's deceiving.
US 50 Monarch, meh, depends on your level of motivation. US 50 between Pueblo and Salida is more of a problem
US 550 "Million Dollar Highway" Red Mtn., Coal Bank, Molass Passes. There is no guardrail on most of Red Mtn., portions of Coal Bank and Molass the guardrails have fallen off due to erosion, come to think of it, so has parts of the road.
Co 139 Douglass Pass, avg. a fatal accident of some sort almost monthly.
CO 133 McClure Pass, it doesn't look like it's designed for trucks, but it is. Very deceiving, not routinely maintained in the winter
Instead of US 50 Monarch Pass, try US 50 between Gunnison and Montrose, there are stretches of level road that get so badly iced (it's alongside a lake) you need chains on level surface, then they throw a couple of neat Passes (Blue Mesa, Cerro Summit). Monarch has a 35 mph limit, the other two have a 55 mph limit.
US 16 Worland to Buffalo Wyo.
one everyone misses US 40 Rabbit Ears Pass, US 40 Berthoud Pass (actually pretty tame)
CO 145, Lizard Head Pass, let's just say, that in the Winter, sometimes CDOT forgets to put the chain law up or even plow it CO 145, and it's pretty heavily travelled.otherhalftw and cowboy_tech Thank this. -
CenutryClass and striker Thank this.

True some of the roads in NYC if your not strapped in tight your Slamming your Head off the Roof of a Freightliner CONDO. DO not ask how I know.
-
Any road can be dangerous if you underestimate it and don't pay attention to what your doing!
I've never been out west, and probably never will, but every winter I see tons of accidents on I80 in PA between Lamar (173) and Milton (215)...the wind whips through the valley and that stretch of road gets icy in a big hurry...
