so i was here a year ago, i'm almost 21. please read and ask anything and help with what i've asked.

i have a question for you regarding trucking and owner operated trucking. please while reading this have an open mind. ever since i was able to walk i have been fascinated with semi trucks. i went with my uncle who owns Hermes Heavy Haul, on a trip. i was in heaven. i'm only 20 now and got 9 months till the 21. i've been researching this for 3 years now so please spare me the away from family, long hours, low income stuff cause i am well aware of this. i have a handicap in my arms. i know right, wrong profession. look i don't want your personel opinion that i can't do it, you don't know me, let me tell you some things then you can tell me. so i drive a ford F-250 ext. cab, 8 foot bed, and i do this driving with my feet. not your feet. my feet. don't look down at yours and say how can that be. my toes are long like fingers, and i have tremendous strength, manipulation and dexterity in my feet like your hands. i have been reading and the truck bible states that a person is disqualified to drive if he/she has an impairment of a limb, however here is my question, i can drive, with no mods or anything, meaning that their is no impairment of truck operations. therefore i should not even fall under that rule. i drive with my left foot on the pedals, right foot on wheel. and would have no problem. working the knobs, buttons, king pin, trailer hook ups, lowering and raising the trailer. the CB i can put on the side of seat and can operate with hand which i have some control of. their is nothing that is involved in trucking that i cannot do as well or as complete as you. obviously i would need an autoshifter, but other than that, maybe a steering wheel ball for peace of mind and i am set. nothing more is needed.

i don't mean to sound rude, earlier, i was just trying to show how serious i was and not wasting your time. my dream is to be an owner operator, and actually some people say because of the way i am its the only way i can get jobs. i just want to know what you think. thanks so much

First off.....well done on not letting anything stand in your way. I would have to agree that being an O/O is probably the only way you'll be able to get into the industry.

But I want to ask you a couple of questions. How would you be able to open the doors on the trailer? That also being said how would you be able to chain up if you needed to?
I really think you would have to have a co driver to help you with some of the tasks other than driving that you would run into.

    Good luck

I believe you are capable of what ever you desire. My advice is to take baby steps.

Find a situation where you can learn. It is way too early for you to be an Owner/OP.

You need to find a mentor to help you. There is a veteran driver out there to help you. My advice is to go find that mentor.

    I wish you well.

I would start with a medical card and go from there. I can only imagine that most carriers will have some type of restrictions if you can't do this or do that. Is there any chance that you could get on with your Uncle's company?

thanks for the question, well with my feet, i know thats not a good answer but, look at it this way, next time ur truckin, stand two feet behind the dry van which is what i'd probably pull. now i'm 5'10" and can easily stand on one footy while doing stuff with other, i can reach up to my head height if need be. i have strong toes and feet and good ankle roll. i can latch and lock doors. as well as lower the trailers and raise using the lever. chain up? like tires? it would be a challenge but i can do it. lay the chains out and fix them on the wheel and if i had to i'd sit on a stool and use both feet for securing. yes i have kinda figured if i was to truck i'd have to be an O/O. thanks for ur question. please feel free to ask

so i have sat on my ### for 2 days, forreal i've gotten up 3 times from my computer to move my truck, eat and go to the bathroom, i've been scanning everything. i've come to to some good stuff, 1 is i learned the words to tom petty's running down a dream. 2 is i think i could pull this off. i read this on a truckers forum i've been askin questions on for a few years.

"I have met a couple of drivers that were paraplegics. They had their trucks modified with a "crane" to lift them and their chairs in and out of their trucks. I have heard of a few with prosthetic arms/hands as well. They got the necessary "waivers".

can u imagine the #### they went through when they said i wanna drive. pardon my english, i'm to tired to type politely.

if a paraplegic can drive than i see no reason why i can't.

i've studied the 39.41 bull like one of my textbooks. well thats bad lol. but i did read it about 100 times
and it keeps talking about being impaired. like i'm drunk. these are all technicalities. its all interferes with and impaires but if i got up in a truck and started.... wait let me go through the check list as i seen in a few vids. say a trailer was on my king pin. i would go and plug the hookups in as i observed they do in the vids. no prob i would have with that. then go lock the back of trailer. which the loaders do but just to prove a point i can stand on one foot and latch the latches as i seen its not a big deal. then go to lower the trailer using the crank, still no problem.

moving on to truck inspection. lift the hood. haha i stopped for an hour tryin to figure that one out. i think all i had to do is make a pole with a hook. which i can operate with my hand. so still no impairment. then up into the cab. i can operate all the switches, lights, air controls. and most importantly, i can drive with no mods. aside from the actual getting job part i just see no reason why they would refuse me in fact if they did i'd probably look into a lawsuit. idk lol

I got to tell you brother, your an inspiration to us all, that is, us all that have no impairments (of any type) and can get along just fine. Yet, for some reason, we sit around complaining what we can and cannot get done. Or, what we cannot do because we weren't born in the right family or what not. I personally wish I had your drive, your discipline and desire to do the things that you want to do. Life is full of people, of all walks, that have done amazing things and I have seen people, on tv, that do exactly what you speak of, driving with there feet and all. I have not seen it in a big truck but that should not be a problem. I feel, if it hasn't been done yet, than you very well may be the first. Again, life is full of those that have paved the way due to perserverence..please forgive my spelling, as I am too lazy to look it up..LOL.

I wish you the best my friend, if I may call you that, and pray that someone in the trucking world gives you the oppertunity to prove yourself.

    God Bless
