From MILKMAN "I had a guy try to trade me a barely used Connex HP radio for my old Galaxy the other day."
Got to wonder who and how bad that connex was tortured.
I've been researching "the best CB" dilemma myself , thing I've got it narrowed down to a connex 3300hp peaked tuned and converted, hear mostly good stuff if it done right.
had a cobra 29 sucked out of the box 3 shops 3 mega peak and tunes (torturing the more thing I now realize) a dozen antennas and coax combos its in the trash.
Got myself a uniden 78 and wilson trucker 2000 gets 2 or so miles out of the box, no alleged CB techs have or will touch it!
I just want the connex for a little range and to cut thru a little bit of background noise.
So for a reccomend get the uniden 78 love was selling it for $110 w/$20 rebate you can find a trucker 2000 for about $55, stay away from the chinese made cobra never had no luck with them even in the little grms radios the cheap unidens work bet
    PHP:
ter. if you come across an older used cobra from the philipines i heard they are good but never heard of no one parting with one.
If you want talk a little louder get better range invest $250 or so on a connex 3300hp from an authoriesed dealer its a quality built piece of equipment been around a long time. At least thats where I am at in my search for the "best CB"

I dont know much about radios but i have had a Uniden PC66, Galaxy 959, and now a Connex 3300HP. The Connex has made me forget about spending 300 on a radio its well worth it.

Exactly! They are made FOR the CB market, labeled as "amateur" or "10 Meter" radios in the hope of sliding under the FCC's radar. However, the so-called "10 Meter" radios appear on a list from FCC's Office of Technology as being illegal to market. They are not certified for CB use (neither are ANY amateur radios), and never will be approved for that use because they are easily modified to cover not only the amateur frequencies, but also all of 24 to 30 MHZ in many cases. Connex is one of those on that list. What gets them ON that list besides being non-certifiable? Look at one, for example. It has "bands" of channels. CB radio is ONE "band" (26.965 MHZ to 27.405 MHZ) that can easily be covered in ONE so-called "band". There is NO such thing as a "freeband".
Anytime someone gets caught operating on those so-called "funny" channels, they often get nailed for several thousands of $$$$$$ (serves them RIGHT!) :biggrin_255: Why? Because CBers have FORTY--count 'em----FORTY channels to play on! MOST of those forty channels go begging while CBers claim that their legal channels are crowded when they are not at all busy. They just want some reason to feel "special", or have a secret channel that only they have a stolen privilege to use, so they often end up on what they mistakenly think is an "empty" channel. For example, those "28 MHZ" frequencies are assigned to the 10 meter amateur band by international treaty. And they are divided up by the mode of operation. The lower end of 10 Meters is reserved for DIGITAL modes only---morse code, packet, teletype, pactor, etc. That's why when CB types plop their unwelcomed and illegal tails there, they get busted by FCC. And I say that only because they are committing an illegal act by transmitting where they don't belong! IOW, their AM carriers and trucker lingo sticks out like a sore thumb when they nominally interfere with the licensed hams. As pointed out, truck drivers often land on 28.085 MHZ using AM because 2 clicks of that infernal channel selector puts them up there with their illegally modified Galaxies, Connexes, etc! Then the hams go looking for the perps and turn them in.

So the whole moral of the story, and the reason for posting, is simply, while many drivers will defiantly purchase and use illegal "10 meter" radios, they would be well advised to stay OUT of the 10 Meter band! Ten meters is NOT "channels", it is not permitted to CB operators, and those who persist in operating up there will eventually be caught and turned in by the legitimate users of the band. If Mr. Ross were to be caught today as opposed to 2007, the fines have gone UP as they do periodically!:biggrin_2553: It's now $18,000! I don't think an "export" radio is worth all that! LOL!

Yeah it is especially since I have no intention of using any ham freq I only want a little more power in the 27mhz or 11m range. I dont want any SB USB or LSB mostly use 19.
It nice to hear and be heard over the noise and get more then 2 miles from a truck mounted antenna. Again I have no intention of broadcasting on any reserved, emergency or sacred freq. my only intention is increasing range, that can be done by over modulating causing bleed over noise and making electronics near my fowl up or I can get a radio with a stronger carrier and keep the modulation inside tolerance.
Hundreds of manufacturers make thousands of these 10 meter or export radios and sell millions of them. Every other truck in the parking lot has one I am sure not everyone of them is broadcasting on the sacred ham band and I do not see the FCC out here righting fines. I just want to know where to find a dealer that knows how to make a 10m or export a CB with out over driving it or hacking it up.

Why ? spend the money if your not going to run it to its potential ?
there are SSB Cobra/Uniden for much less.
Anyone that sells Exports can sell you a virgin radio with the conversion and alignment.
Check with RadioActive,Mike will do you right.

I have had all kinds of radios. I have found myself happy with a Galaxy 959. Its all about what your comfortable with and what your wanting. I like talking DX (skip) and use a 959 or a magnum s-980.
