Again, I'll say that I can take a little Cobra or Uni and set the modge on it, add a footwarmer for signal and get out there with the best of 'em. I know because I'd done it for my early years of driving, the little guy even shooting skip by accident at times.
(this done even on an old Grey 100w!)
I have a currently damaged export I used for the purpose of the sideband. (RCI 2950) No real need to get into the nether channels to get distance. What others do is none of my business.

I've never had anyone complain about me sounding like trash on my cobra 19 (made in china) the farthest I've gotten out during the day was about 2.5 miles.

I think if you really want range that bad.. you should get your ham license [I believe the entree level license is enough - I understand the test is free too now?] and operate on the 2 meter band. all the transceivers I've seen are at least 50 watts. and then you can use all the filthy power you want.

So much easier to just buy a 10 meter and a good antenna and key up with 70+ watts for under $400.

I heard that 2 meter is boredom city around here. You'd have to have some friends with them so you'd have someone to talk to.

Snooty if it's an RCI 2950 you're talking about, they're good on ssb and ok on AM...most truckers only use AM and not ssb....you should be able to find a good CB shop to work on it, or just send it to Sparkys CB shack, just google his name on the web and you'll find his site.

In my opinion, for the money, a Uniden pc66 is about as good as you can buy. Will talk forever usually with no problems and sound great with a RK56 mic. Pretty much the same radio as the Cobra 25 for a little less money. Its my opinion that the Unidens are a little better in quality than the Cobras. If you wanna export, keep an eye out on eBay and try and find an old President Grant. Man those things sound sweet but are hard to come by.

Ah, the 'best' CB discussion. Uniden= Toyota Camry. Cobra= Honda Accord. Galaxy= Ferrari 458 Italia. Bang for the buck, or biggest bang? Let your wallet decide.
