    What?????

You've been drivin 4 years less than me and when I started all of those things existed and were regularly installed in trucks!

My 1964 Freightliner had...335 Cummins with a Jake brake, Dana Spicer 4X4 trans, A/C (kinda crappy but it worked well enough) A heater that would cook your ### out of the truck if you wanted it to, a crappy defrost fan that worked OK if you turned it on as soon as you started the truck and wipers that worked fairly well.

What the hell were YOU drivin'?

I ordered my 1975 W9 a model with all of those things except the Cummins and the jake brake...It had a 1693T/A 425 CAT and air ride suspension and a 60" walk in bunk and HOLY COW!!!! It even had radial tires.

There were LOTS of thirteen speeds and 10 speed overdrive trannies on the road by the time you started driving 33 years ago...It was 1977 and even Peterbilt had finally gotten around to building a walk in sleeper by then...

You make it sound like they didn't have any of that stuff and that's just not true!

I learned on two sticks....I didn't even know how to shift and air shift tranny until I bought my 4th truck...It was a thirteen speed and I had to get a friend of mine to show me how to work it right.

It seems funny now but it seemed complicated to me at the time.

I could drive a Mack Quadraplex but not a stinkin' 13 speed!

It's not the easiest box to drive...Once you figure it out it's not too bad though.

I got a kick out of that 30 year veteran driver on ice road truckers that said he'd always drove 18 speeds and yet he couldn't figure out a super 10.

Thank you very much for your help...Now it make sense for me at all...

Ready? I will never be...Things in my life were always all about "go-for-it" and I paid high prices, eventually ended successful (a few times) and got jacked off and out of business (a lot of times).
I'm ready for failure, it don't scary me.
This is the only way that i could stay in trucking. I no longer can play this stupid "dispatcher-megacarrier deal" = .31 cpm + screwed-up-with-no-grease-deal while somebody is making real $$$$ on me.
The option of get afraid with economy, challenges and stay living a "miserable-comfortable" life with those &%$## carriers is not considered for me...
If i don't do it, I'll be a frustrated man for the rest of my life...not worth the frustration for the CPM offered now.
Since i put my ### in a truck for a trainning, i know what i want from trucking. After spent 6/8 months burning my calculator and got the conclusion that in the worst scenario I can make at least the same money that i made as company-driver, so...why not ?
If i can't make it, i will be another one out of this business but with my mind clean and ready for the next challenge. I didn't born a trucker, i can survive and make a living without drive a truck.
Also I have the worst habit of contradict predictions (had so many negative that u can't picture)...it's my favorite hobby.
I do prefer the taste of failure rather then the taste of cowardice, i can't be conformed with this current system that screwed up, abuse all those brave man's and woman's truckers that dedicate their life out of home without any recognition to fat more and more some mega corporations bank accounts and their executives for tomorrow suddenly abandon them stranded OTR like trash (Arrow trucking, for example) without any consideration or respect. No way.

Honestly I feel i will never be ready for nothing, not just to be an O/O, but to be a father, to be an grandfather, to build up a family, to be a good spouse...those are things that just happen...if i freeze, I will never do something in my life.

Thanks for your concern and advice, believe me it was very important and help me to consolidate my convictions.

I dont want to discourage you but I agree with others who think it might be in your best interest to do a few more years in a company truck before you buy your own. You're going to be leasing on with an outfit I and others can tell you freedom is only an illusion going that route. I started out in my truck last fall and quickly realized I only have 2 real freedoms. Freedom from payments and freedom to take time off when I want as often as I want. The string attatched to the latter is I have to give notice which kinda sucks. The money is not enough but more than I cleared in a company ride. I #### near went under right out of the gate and blew an almost $15000 cash reserve fund. I've slowly recovered. It was scary and still is once in a while but I do love it and wont ever look back. It's so easy to fail in this business I'm just saying take your time dont rush there will always be trucking opportunity.

    Braazooka Thanks this.
