I live in middle Tn. and have been approached about a hauling job that's in state and would only be around 18K-20K lbs. total counting truck, trailer and cargo. I don't have a CDL but what else do I need to legally do this?

How do you know what the total weight will be if you don't know what truck or trailer? What is the size and weight of the freight itself?

18-20 k or 9- 10 ton would be a straight truck job you'll need the appropriate licence for that specific truck.

That's what I'm asking--what is the appropriate license I would need?

Yes, that' the main thing. What do I need to do it for hire/$? It appears I may need, my own authority, USDOT # and appropriate insurance.

A class D license is only good up to 16,000#. From 16,001 up to 26,000#, you'd need a class C. Not every state bothers with the class D, though...and in those states the class C is the smallest license they issue.
