Wheel seals are on the inside of the hub around the axle spindle... When they go out the hub oil will all leak out and streak the inside of the tire as it spins. Usually the earliest way to catch such a problem is to see the oil in the brakes or streaking the inside of the inner most tire. You ever heard of a truck or trailer loosing a set of duals??? That is what can happen if a bad wheel seal is not taken care of... All the oil leaks out, the bearings over heat and melt then the hub either eats the spindle nut away or slips over the spindle nut and the entire wheel/drum/hub assembly comes off. The following is a picture of a wheel seal.

Pretty hard to catch that leaky seal when you don't crawl under there and look
But yet the OP states he does a very thorough pre trip.. even though he admitts he doesn't look under the truck or trailerLast edited by a moderator: Sep 12, 2023
Sons Hero, Kyle G., Magoo1968 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I changed out 3 wheel seals on my setup (1 drive, one on the lead, and 1 on the pup) this summer alone... Id hate to know what it feels like to completely loose a wheel end at a gross of 106k+

At my age, my crawling under a trailer days are behind me. Unless I'm on the side of the road like recently when I had a brake chamber fail and I had to cage that brake to get back to the yard. I do squat down and shine my light under and give everything a good look. Many times when a seal is leaking you will see oil on the tires. And I definitely check the hub oil level every pre trip.Albertaflatbed, Sons Hero, 48Packard and 4 others Thank this.

It just occurred to me that people might misinterpret what I said in the OP.
When i said that i have a reputation for doing a thorough pre-trip, people here might misinterpret me by thinking that I am saying I actually do a thorough pre-trip. I do NOT think I do a thorough pre-trip (compared to all that SHOULD be checked on a pre-trip). In the OP, I said that I have a reputation for doing a thorough pre-trip. I say it is a false reputation. Why do i have this false reputation in the real world ? Because most drivers in the real world do not do any pre-trip at all!
I listed ONLY those 13 things I always do on a pre-trip to mean that I do a half-### pre-trip, and I still have a reputation for doing a thorough pre-trip. It's not that I'm so good. The other drivers are so bad!
My point is that most truckers do an extremely crummy job on the pre-trip.Albertaflatbed Thanks this. -
If it leaks on the tire. That's a pretty bad leak.
Most times they don't get that bad. You can catch it long before the tire.Albertaflatbed and Sons Hero Thank this. -
