IH truck guy, yea I love my removable king pin. Sometimes I am off a little bit and the pin jumps up over the 5th wheel. Just pull pin out or raise the neck and pull out and re group

Former yard goat driver here. When I jumped the kingpin, I rolled the landing gear down as hard as possible. The next step was to drop the airbags. If that still didn't work, I'd crank the landing gear even more. The last course of action would be to put like, a wheel chock between the 5th wheel and the trailer.

You could also set your yellow parking brake (important!), and raise the 5th wheel with the lever. Just make sure you won't tip the trailer over!!! this can help you crank the landing gear down even more. Eventually, you crank that landing gear enough, you'll get enough clearance to get out of that mess. And if you're like me, you'll turn right around and do it again on your 2nd attempt.

This problem on a yard dog is easy to fix with the hyd 5th wheel. There's on reason to GOAL in a yard dog, all you have to do is turn around. Every yard dog I've seen has a back door to walk right out on the platform.

They have spring suspension, not air ride.

I'm trying to figure out this one too.... how is this a major issue in a yard truck? Just raise the 5th wheel, drop the landing gear, then drop the fifth wheel and get on the right side of the kingpin. Voila.

Now if you don't have a 5th wheel that raises like that (not including dropping your air bags but a true raise/lower 5th wheel) then it becomes a task for wood blocks and a lot of sweat/tears.

In keeping with the finest TTR traditions, I jumped mine this morning on the load I'm delivering now.
It was so high, by the time I saw that was already too late & you can actually feel it dragging across through fifth wheel, that I just dumped the suspension, titled wheel forward, good to go in about 15 seconds.

I jumped the 5th wheel on an rgn once. Got ramps on the tractor and the rgn had rollers for thr ramps. I hit it crooked and the trailer bucked sideways and then back straight. The kingpin landed on the front side of the 5th wheel.

I grabbed some dunnage. Disconnected the leveling valve from the differential. Raised the tractor suspension as high as possible. Placed dunnage under the trailer. Dumped airbags. Placed dunnage on ramps. Aired up suspension as high as possible. Placed more dunnage under trailer. Finally lifted the trailer high enough to get the 5th wheel under the kingpin.

A block of wood under the rear of the fifth wheel to tip it forward has never failed me

I backed into the front of a trailer today, fortunately not very hard. Not quite the sound I was listening for. And then needed a yard dog to lift the trailer so I could crank the landing gear. This thing is a POS. Didn't help that someone was lazy and didn't raise it at all when they dropped it in a large groove.

I may need a new shoulder after this ordeal.
