What do you do in your downtime OTR?

Wow...brings back some memories. When I first was starting out, I'd occasionally have to deliver to GM @ OKC. They'd have 20+ trucks scheduled for 7:00 pm, but unless you had a hot item they needed, they wouldn't touch a single truck until 3 am...after shift change...and then they'd have the trucks docked & unloaded pretty quick. If you showed up at the guard shack at 7:01, you were "late" and your company would hear about it...even though everybody knew you'd be sitting there for 7-8 hours minimum before they even THOUGHT about assigning doors. Anyway, I was there one night and pulled out my accoustic, opened the case and tossed some in some spare change and started strumming. Security came rolling up in their little golf cart and just kind of sat there for a moment or two until I said "If I'm going to be sitting around out here, I may as well try to get paid SOMETHING..." They weren't too pleased, but I didn't care. Some places they do you a favor when they ban you.

 

I wonder if OP managed to live the dream, or wound up in a nightmare.

 

Well I have been trucking for a little bit now .
While it is a whole lot of work it is not all work
The thing I do is get out and see the area I am in if I am there for awhile .

Back in the day I used to carry my surf board and my fishing pole and even my bow .
I have stopped and surfed up and down the west coast .
I have fished mountain streams Midwest ponds 2 oceans and the gulf of Mexico .

I have been to museums and battle fields .
I have been to concerts and seen bands in dive bars all over this fine country.
I have been to biker parties car shows VFW's and American Legion halls .

I have went to county fairs and goat ropings state fairs in at least 28 states .
I have seen fire works in big cities and small towns .

Just because you are not at your home town doesn't mean that you are not at someones home town .
Life happens everywhere not just at your house on the weekends .
Get out of your truck spend a nickle or two and enjoy the best thing about trucking .
The chance to see this great country and the people that make it great .

Life doesn't have to stop because you are driving a truck .
Your time off is just that yours get out and enjoy it .

Trucking is like anything else in life you get out of it what you put into it .
So the next time you are " stuck " out for the weekend just get on that fancy phone and ack the Google lady what there is to in your area for the weekend .
Go do or see something that you would not do normally .
Catch a play or go to a Britney Spears concert or a turkey shoot .

The point of all this rambling on is you don't have to suffer through life in a truck you can and should get out and enjoy it .
