What do you do to Protect your tarps from rips

I second the old straps and fire hose.

 

Mostly i use the felt. It is bulky as you say but i found places to stuff it. I also keep pieces of rubber, cardboard and carpet handy along with zip ties and a staple gun

 

I use carpet strips (18”x4ft), sections of old straps and a canvas tarp. All depending on the load. I also have a ton of felt pads.

The felt pads seem to work best to protect straps and the canvas tarp is good for protecting the tarps.

 

I like their felt too. You can have them grommet around the edge to (gently) hold it in place.

I cut mine into smaller pieces for a job. Need to get a larger piece again.

 

You could cut up an old strap into 16 inch strips and gorilla tape 4 of them together. Store them flat or folded at the joints. I keep all my broken straps rolled up set in the bottom of the headache rack, use em for edge protectors, folded up to use for dunnage or padding to put pressure on a loose item in a stacked pallet.

 

We use rolls of felt padding cut 6' wide and about 15-20' long. 2 of them side by side will over lap a little in the middle and hang over the sides of your piece. Some of the stuff I haul is nothing but sharp edges the entire length. I also carry 8 moving blankets in the truck. Only take the rolls of felt when I know I'll need it. Rarely do we end up with backhauls that can't be padded by blankets.

 

I got 8 moving blankets plus several random pieces of carpet

Moving blankets and those pads don’t work for me. They are fine if you can get a strap over it to hold it in place. Sometimes it isn’t possible and I try using tape to hold them in place. It works but only for the one time. When I go to rip the tape off the entire pad/blanket gets torn to pieces.
