With my little cat c12 motor, and 10 speeds, I am not skipping any gears upshifting if I have a load....empty I dont' skip any gears on the high side...not enough power to pull up from the lower rpms...could, but it takes forever for the rpms to come up then...
the only time I can skip is if I am starting out down hill, and then I may have to skip a gear in the low box cause we are rolling downhill...

Even with my big cat c15 and 18 speeds, I am not skipping any gears upshifting if I have a load...again unless I am starting out down hill, then I may have to skip a gear in the low box. Empty I can skip every other gear in the low box, by not shifting the splitter, so I just hit 3 gears in the low box and then go through all 8 gears on the high side.

Not that, just trying to get the hell out of everybody's way. On my route, which goes through several small towns and open country, I find life a lot easier if I can get ahead of the guys who don't have the benefit of traveling the same road every day.

In fact, most times when it comes to a light, other drivers are passing me up while I time the light. Then we get to the light and I end up slingshotting right past them. Most nights I can time the lights so I don't have to stop in the towns I go through.

    Not bragging, just sayin...

I do a lot of stop and go driving, and have a lot of stop signs and RR crossings I have to stop at with HazMat, so with the 10 speed tranny and a load, I do the following when stopping: Once I slow to 45 mph I drop to 9th, and at 35 mph I drop to 8th, then I will either drop to 6th or put the clutch in and brake down to 3 - 5 mph...
(and I still gotta get to the low box, and I cannot until my speed drops to 3 mph and I want to be in 3rd gear)

I move the range selector to the low side and put the clutch in and brake to about 3 mph and shift to neutral....then let the clutch out and brake a little more until she goes into 3rd gear and she usually drops right in .....now...this is perfect for a real slow rolling stop that is so close to a stop, but yet you have just a bit of momentum to take off in 3rd, and if there is traffic I can step on the clutch and I am already in the low box, so I just have to shift to 2nd gear to start. So on most stops I go from 3rd to 4th to 5th and then the high box....

At stop lights my biggest problem is I am slowed down to 7 - 8 mph and the LIGHT CHANGES TO GREEN...and I can't get into the low box to grab 5th and I am going too slow to grab 6th gear and losing speed while I am grinding away in the low box....I hate when that happens...any suggestions?

I would rather have a light turn red on me at the last second than have it turn green on me!!!:biggrin_2557:

    "Control gear" WTF is that?

I guess if I am driving a Maxidyne with a 5 speed, I'm always in control

If people are splitting every gear, and gearing down to 5th or below at every stop, it's no wonder transmissions and clutches don't last, not to mention the wasted fuel.

But, I guess the're doing what they were taught in school. That's the reason for my question.

Well, in school I was taught that you use every gear, up and down. Go figure... It wasn't until I got with my trainer I discovered the joys of skipping gears.

I was taught in school to be in low range when you stop, can't recall the reason but it made sense to me at the time. Now I always try to be in low range when stopping. No big deal. Sometimes that is impossible but I do make the attempt.

Starting off is in LO when loaded and 1 when empty, why stress the drive train more than you have to. Shifting up and down after that depends on grade, speed, if I want to slow but not stop, like the stupid traffic lights around Winnipeg. Mostly when loaded I hit every gear.
