Well, it's a 35mph speed limit going down that hill (someone correct me if my memory is betraying me again), which will usually put you in 8th gear on a 10 speed. Drop it another gear into 7th for that old adage about going down a gear lower than you went up, and the Jake should hold you at 35-ish

Anybody realise the OP was asking about climbing the hill?

No one can really answer this because our lifes are built on a variable, Keep your truck pulling up hill around 1500 - 1600 rpms, Stay in the right lanes going up the hill after Castaic, They will write you a real expensive ticket for getting over there up that hill.
Going up the hill when you rpms drop down to 1400-1500 drop a gear, new trucks can lug down as low as 1200 -1300 but I would drop a gear before that I don't like lugging a engine going up steep grades in the heat, Frazier Park just north of the 138 is the over the top point, as you drop down passing Flying J on the left dont let your speed build up too fast , 60 is about it in that area , your just going to have to slowdown past the NB pickle park on your right.

Make sure your engine brake is set on high, it will seem flat to you at this point, As you past Lebec and start down you are now in a 35 mph zone all the way to the bottom, Im guessing but probably around 6th gear maybe, let your engine run up to 2000 against the engine brake, take your time going down, Its ok to go down it a litttle to slow, you can go down it faster later.

Find a Stevens Truck they go down it nice and slow, follow them down. At the bottom of the hill you have Petro on the west and a TA on the right, Fast Food the Del Taco by Petro is good. From this point up to Fresno you have truck stops all the way up, make sure you follow the signs and stay on 99 if your going to Fresno, I5 exits to the right, 99 to the left.

Oh yea once you pass Hwy 46 going north the cb radio channel goes back to 19, bottom of the hill to Hwy 46 used to be 15. Stay below 60 after Hwy 46 (wasco exit), north of Fresno its a strict 55 till your north of Sac.

If your going south loaded you'll probably be in 5th or 6th at best if your heavy maybe lower than that.

Hope this helps, better to ask, than guess, better to admit your new.

The main thing the old man told me when he trained me was you can only go down the hill to fast once, you can go down the hill to slow many times.

6th gear full jakes at 44k weight downhill for your first try. Get a feel for your truck first time out then experiment.
