First of all thank you all for the comments.

Well I have a friend who drives a truck and told me that i could use his truck to practice. so I'm planning to do a lot of practice with this truck before I take the test.

BTW, I think that is a shame that you HAVE to go through a '' school '' in order to become an employable truck driver, I'm sure most of the best drivers out there didn't go to the so-called schools ... did they???

another question ... whats the difference between company driver and OTR driver ?? I think I would like OTR better, do you think it would be better/easier for me to become an OTR driver ????? keep in mind that I'm getting my license the old fashioned way.

once again I thank you all for your time and help.

Most company drivers are OTR drivers.

That's great if you have a mentor who can take you under his wing. It may very well be an excellent way for you to learn and get started in the business. Knowing someone on the inside is the best key to opening doors in any walk of life, not just trucking. Maybe your friend can help open some doors for you.

Truck driving schools are not new. The school that I am attending has been around for nearly 50 years. However, an accredited school helps a company get a better idea of what you have been taught, (the learning is still up to you).

Probably the number one reason that many companies like schools, (their own or certain ones that they like to recruit from), is LAWSUITS. That's right, our litigious society has forced companies and their insurance companies to have stricter and stricter rules to minimize how much they have to pay out every time there is an accident.

OTR = over the road, which means you will not be home every night.

Company driver simply means you are an employee of a trucking company and drive their trucks.

O/O = owner operator, you own your own truck and often sign on with a company and only haul freight for them. Some O/O's operate their own authority, meaning they can haul for anyone, but have more red tape and expenses.

Since I am just a student, if I have stated anything that is incorrect, I am sure a real trucker will be along shortly to clear it up.

i failed one time.then passed and got my class a cdl.i first failed airbrakes but was given another chance the same day by the dps.the road test wasnt that difficult but it was frustrating because you cant hit any curbs with the truck or the tandems on the trailer.Your most likely going to need to go to school to get your license unless you got connections.

Oh yeah sorry to get off subject. START APPLYING just like the other guy said

Good luck with this endeavor. I to went and got my cdl on my own. Got the permit went to Keypower and took the 40 hour course they offer for 1995.00 back in May 2007 and i am still unable to obtain a driving job local or over the road. I live in Port Saint Lucie/ Fort Lauderdale. I have a buddie that has a trucking company but most companies wont use him to verify because i dont have any w-2's for driving for him nor does he have a safety department. I have been dealing with thi s for 2 years now. And there are no companies hiring south of GA.

Good luck and let me know what you find please.
