What I have learned...

I do whatever it takes to haul the loads im told to haul as a company man, so if i need to run low fuel to scale a load and make $$$ I will, but most of the loads that I personally haul aren't over 44k...

just hauled a 29k coil back yesterday.

 

No I agree with you...I dont care if its otr or local my max is 48k if you have something that weighs 50k guess what? I have never and will never play the fuel game that makes no sense to me. I always top my tanks because I keep track of my mileage so if my gauges go bad I know how far I can get at each stage

 

You are trying to figure out what makes truck drivers tick? Good luck with that. My company had me do a personality test and when the HR director finally decided she had time to go over the results my driver manager called and I told her "I don't have time for corporate BS, I have freight to haul" and just walked out.

 

Agreed. In the story, Good made adjustments to accomodate the weight. Normally, thats good enough. Factor in the extreme weather and low fuel, and now we see a Good Driver stuck in a bad situation. In extreme weather, fuel is at a premium (just ask the people in Long Island after Sandy). Good Driver is now part of the food chain just like Bad Driver.

uh...so you can haul the maximum allowed freight and not have to turn down loads because you will be overgross. DUH

 

There is some times where playing the fuel game helps out a lot but also going into a place not completely full i do all the time but, i also know how much my truck holds so i can take the amount of gal. suspected to be gone and times it by 7.5lbs and get how much weight I'm short. Now in saying that i also understand wanting to not play the fuel game but when you start getting in to profit sharing the more profit the company makes (i.e. more loads combined on 1 trailer to maximize the truck) the bigger the check at the end of the year so yes i will play the fuel game.

 

Usually, the loads where a dispatcher wants you to do the fuel game is a cheap load, like roofing shingles or slinky coils. Running 50 gallons at a time for a dollar a mile freight. I cant do it...it is against my religion.

 

I do try to not rock the boat unlike some of our other drivers who are the "problem children" for my driver manager. But when you go to the "World Headquarters" and policy is above common sense I get turned off. I dont voice my concerns just to hear myself talk, I do it for a reason. Some trucking companies are too many chiefs and not enough indians.

 

Don't sweat it, this guy likes to argue with everyone and is a graduate of the Tool Academy. I believe it is his life's mission to argue with god one day that it should have only taken 5 days to create the world
