After the gulf war there was 670 wells on fire and 90% of them were put out using sea water with a new technique developed by a Hungarian Co that used an old Soviet tanks with MiG-21 jet turbine engine on it to blast water on the wellhead.
Using explosives is like blowing out a candle it is sucking all the oxygen out from wellhead faster then the fuel can burn. The the use of a jet engine blasting water is like blowing out a candle but with a mouth full of water.

 

That’s awesome. Will have to look at that. I was too young during the Gulf War to take in much of what was happening. I do remember a funeral though for family friends son.

 

they estimate it was going to take five years to put them all out and it was done in way less then a year. Cool way that they got the sea water to the desert in massive amounts was they reversed the pumps on the oil pipe lines that were used to carry oil out to the ships.
