Various types of planktons died and settled to the bottom of a wet location, then gets covered by sediment. This layer of dead planktons is then subjected to high pressure and temperature, plus time. The results are hydrocarbons in the form of gases and liquids. Coal and it’s constituents are from plant matter that has been basically been formed under the same process.

 

I know. Mud doesn't turn into a living thing all by itself. A few organic molecules sure, but a complex cell that reproduces, that sounds impossible. But how to fit God into the Biologist's lab?
