I agree on the auto change lenses. There’s a very small time lag between the arc strike and the darkening of the lens, and the residual effect from it accumulates over time.

Old partner used a common coat hanger wire from our uniform mans supply for his acetylene welding. Laughed at him when first told to go up front an get him one, Believer after he used it. And could braze like putting it on with a small cake spatula.

If you want to try and learn to weld without much outside help there is really only one option... Start with stick welding, its the most forgiving, inexpensive to get into, and most importantly it forces you to learn the basics.

Go find an old "buzz box" stick welder you can pick up cheap, maybe get someone that knows how to weld to try it out before you buy it to make sure it at least functions somewhat correctly. Alot of welding supply stores also repair welders... Sometimes they have older ones in the back they will sell pretty cheap, amd they always know what local welders that might have something they would be willing to sell. Get some junk steel and a box of 1/8 inch diameter 6010 welding rod. Set it for about 135 amps and then play around with it. Find a GOOD YouTube welder that does stick welding... Watch, listen, and try to mimic the movements he does with the rod. I will tell you the key to ANY good welding: puddle control. Dont watch the arc... You want to watch that molten liquid puddle and make it go where you want and do what you want.

Another thing... Dont go spend a bunch of money on an auto change welding hood. Just get the traditional flip down style with a "Gold Lens" probably in shade 9 or 10. With a gold lens you will be able to see the different colors of the heat and arc in full spectrum. The cheap "Green Lenses" that most inexpensive welding hood cone with filter out the red, blue, yellow, and most importantly the white... And leave everything you see tinted green and a little orange.

Lenses are a very easy and inexpensive upgrade that takes literally seconds to change out. Get an inexpensive hood and a gold lens that will fit it. Try both the green and then the gold, it's a night and day difference. After awhile you will start to learn what the different colors mean to your welding and you will be able to adjust what you are doing before the puddle falls out or runs away from you.

Ive watched countless videos on YouTube but it just seems like welding is one of those things you need the old timers to teach you, rather then just reading a book or watching a video

I had classes in high school, and my instructor was a cantankerous old guy, he had welded at the power plants and dams, he didn't let anything slide. I learned alot from that man, and I can lay a decent weld down but nothing like @Cattleman84 is showing.

It leaks now. It's like 7 days of work left on it. I'll get into and buy tickets. Ill worry about not after Friday. Every day is 12+ hours. Plus just shy of 2 hours commute.
