    All I have heard was Uncle Tom's cabin itself was spared along with 11 of the cabins there

    Serious question

    Why was the North occupying Fort Sumter? Was it a Federal Facility prior to the South succeeding from the Union?

    The property was owned by the state and leased by the federal government if I remember correctly. Then when South Carolina seceded they asked the federal government to withdraw from the fort. The commander of the fort refused. He didn’t want the optics of him handing over the fort.

    Just like Ft. Hood (or whatever the F they call it now), is in Texas.
