Now here is the weird part - in 2006 it became illegal to scrap US pennies "in the US" but you can scrap them in Mexico and Canada. about 195 to 200 pennies make a pound of copper and price of copper is about $3.92 a pound.

 

Probably because people quickly figured out that they could make more money by scrapping them.
