In another life I worked in the rail industry and i call BS on the theory ofthe "F" on the front. First off the engineers seat posotion dictates which end is forward as on a road engine he is always seated on the the right going forward., looking ahead. In the accompanying foto in the link, that particular engine is facing forward, coupled to the rear of the switcher. The "F" is on the rear of the locomotive. The short front end houses a sand box for the sanders and a comode for the engineer. A trainman does not depend on being able to see a locomotive to determine which way it is getting reaady to move, because most times the engine is out of his line of sight. Further, the trainman is telling the engineer which way to move, not the other way around, as the engineer is simply a driver taking instruction from the conductor.I am aware of the rule that states other wise, however that is not absolutely correct in real life. Amongst other things.
