Like with Elvis, I don’t understand their appeal either.

I remember being a kid in the 70s. Aunts boyfriend had a Firebird, with the bird on the hood. Some of their friends had the vans with the paint scenes on the sides. Like barbarian, hot bikini type chick and a dragon. Lol. Yeah why not. Or other Led Zeppelin Lord of the rings stuff.

Of of what else I could do with that amount of money. In 1961, retd from 3 yrs with U.S. Army, wife and I child, seeking something to do other than trucking. Time on hand and desired to cook out.Took a 20 gallon metal oil barrel (the size of those under a parts washer), hacksawed it in half (Screeched the neighborhood off my carport for an hour) and had a half, curved bottom, with one end closed, other open.
Had a friend braze me 3 half inch pipe nipples on it, 2 at closed end,(spraddled out a little) one in middle near open end. Cut three pieces of formerly frozen and burst galvanized pipe as legs, threaded one end to screw into nipples... Now I had a frame work of standing firebox, one end closed , other open, top open. Put an old refrigerator grilled shelf on top, after rat tail filing some slots on sides to fit/hold in place. Curved bottom not good, so stuck a 8 X 20 piece of asbestos siding in, (positioning with self tapping metal screws from outside sticking in to set level) to spread charcoal on and position it about 4 inches below grill.
    Cook, let it cool, sit.
Going to the lake....unscrew the 3 legs (pipe), stick the half barrel, with grill on and siding inside in a croker sack, drop in the pipe legs toss in the truck. Done many a burger, hot dogs, ribs, etc on that piece of plunder...

My Grandfather was a cabinet maker before electrification of the masses. He had a vise device approximately a foot long with a trip hammer attached that was used to “put the set” in handsaws. As a youngster, I watched, as he also would use a 3 cornered file, with the exact feel and number of strokes per tooth to sharpen his tools. He died in July 1980 at 74.
