Deployed in singles to 300 yards and then doubled at about 175 yard as the enemy line closes. If you had three ranks in a charge situation shoulder to shoulder the Canister would clear about half out of the fight. Not very many actually get to the battery in a full defensive situation using canister.
Gettysburg is one situation I can think of. I recall being told approximately 12000 infantry advanced a mile against the Union Center at the grove of trees and when the Union Artillery was brought up and made ready in massed ranks to support infantry in that situation General Lee was told by one of the commanders in that attack that he no longer had a unit. About 9000 did not get back. And the rest were pretty much done. My figures might be a little different however there are many accounts in history of that particular problem.
Prior to that, the Confederate 140+ gun attack essentially due to defective Charleston SC armory fuses paper burning rates that differed from those made in Richmond caused most of the shells to overshoot and detonate in the rear. And the shooting situation was somewhat of a downward slant causing a overshoot. In that particular situation for 2 hours the windows on the white house in DC downtown shook and rattled inside the panes.
The problem with this kind of ammunition is when it impacts bone such as a arm it essentially turns it to tiny peices at impact site and fractures length wise (Splits) all the way to either joint at the end of the bone. The only first aid possible is amputate. Chop.
Back to the Navy, in the days of sail, they had special chain ammunition that would go be loaded. It does not take much imagination to consider the wreckage against sail and rigging in addition to hordes of men. These would be shot out of cannonades generally.Last edited: Oct 25, 2019

Maybe grab a couple bags of Romaine at the walmart and a bit of salad dressing. Plus a fat bowl dump it all in. Chop a couple of Romas.
You would be much happier I would imagine for the money spent in a tired salad bar that has need of attention all day.RidgeRunner731, Dave_in_AZ and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Ive actually played around with a smaller concept of that... Tiny lead split-shot crimped onto wires to form a small net of wire and shot about the size of a large mans hand... This is then hand loaded into a 12 ga. Shot shell. When this "net" deploys at high velocity it turns pigeons into dozens of tiny... Well lets just call them kitty snacks...
